Nea Marshall Kudi Ngwa, a Cameroonian drag performer and singer best known for winning the first season of RuPaul's Drag Race in 2009, BeBe Zahara Benet is the stage name of Nea Marshall Kudi Ngwa, a Cameroonian-American drag performer and singer best known for winning the first season of the reality-television drag competition RuPaul's Drag Race.

She made a surprise appearance in RuPaul's Drag Race: All Stars' third season in 2018, ranking in the top four.

Early life

In Cameroon, Ngwa was born and raised. His family migrated to France later that year, where Ngwa lived until he landed in Minneapolis at the age of nineteen to complete his college work and be closer to family.

Personal life

He served as a choirmaster and music instructor before starting drag. He doesn't consider himself a drag queen and instead refers to himself as a "drag artist" or a "drag performer." Ngwa is a devout christian.

Career

Benet's first drag appearance was at a Paris fashion preview, where he was required to wear a female costume to walk the runway as a last-minute replacement for a late model. Before moving to Minneapolis in 2000, he was with Cyndi Lauper in The Gay 90s bar. Miss US of A has competed in drag pageants, including Miss US of A.

After RuPaul's invitation after seeing him perform to "Circle of Life" at Minneapolis Pride in early 2009, Ngwa registered for the first season of Logo's reality-TV drag-queen competition RuPaul's Drag Race in early 2009. She was eventually selected from a field of thousands of applicants to become one of the nine queens cast in the season. He was the inaugural champion of the series, having won two challenges during the competition. Bebe's triumph will inspire many young drag queens to pursue drag, including eventual Drag Race season 8 champion Bob The Drag Queen.

Benet appeared in two episodes of RuPaul's Drag U in 2011, as a "drag professor."

Benet was named as the surprise 10th contestant on RuPaul's Drag Race: All Stars' third season premiere, becoming the first-ever winner in the show's history to return for an All-Stars season. He reached the season finale after winning two challenges, but a jury of recently disqualified queens selected him to advance to the final two and ended in joint third place with Shangela.

Benet appeared in the TLC television special Drag Me Down the Aisle, starring Jujubee, Thorgy Thor, and Alexis Michelle, which aired on March 9, 2019, and was later picked up as a series and re-titled Dragnificent.

Felix Baumgartner, Ralphi Rosario, and Mark Picchiotti remixed Benet's first dance number, "I'm the Sh*t." In July 2010, he debuted his second single, "Cameroon." In December 2010, Benet made a cameo appearance in Erasure's re-release of their song A Little Respect (which was a fundraiser for students of the Harvey Milk Institute in San Francisco). "Dirty Drums" was his third single released on iTunes on April 17, 2012. "Face" was his fourth album, and it was announced on March 3, 2014.

Benet released a video of "Little Drummer Boy" on their Drag Race Christmas Queens 4 album.

In November 2017, Ngwa appeared in Queens United, a benefit performance held by Phi Phi O'Hara in the hopes of helping people affected by Hurricane Maria. In 2018, Ngwa created "Roar," a monthly exhibition featuring live dancing.

They co-created, produced, and headlined the Nubia Tour, a live Drag Show honoring Black drag queens through original music, group choreography, video projections, live vocals, lip syncs, and narrative-driven performance art in 2020. On opening night, Vulture.com lauded the cast, RuPaul's Drag Race alum, Bob The Drag Queen, Peppermint, Shea CouleƩ, The Vixen, and Monique Heart, noting the show's "touching sincerity" and "joyous" celebration of black culture.

The tour began with sold-out shows in New York City and plans to visit Los Angeles, as well as other major cities around the United States.

In June 2021, Ngwa will be featured in "Gospel Brunch Drag Show," a "LGBTQIA+ Youth Of Color" exhibition, and the virtual "Pride Bigger Than Texas" event livestreamed from the Bonham Exchange. They will be a featured performer and in Klub Kids London Presents: NOIR: The Tour, where 25% of the funds from the production will be donated to the Black Lives Matter campaign in August 2021.

Being Bebe premiered at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival from June 19-21, 2021, and later screened at the Provincetown International Film Festival on June 23, 2021, 2021, and screened for three days. Bebe Zahara Benet, a filmmaker from Ngwa, was chronicled in the film, as well as his preparations for RuPaul's Drag Race. At the Provincetown International Film Festival, the film received the 2021 Best Documentary Award.
