Early life

Gemma Clare Collins was born in 1981 at Oldchurch Hospital in Romford, East London. She is the niece of Joan (née Williams), who worked as a part-time hairdresser and Alan Collins, the current director of Unisystems Freight, an import-export shipping company. Russell, the company's elder brother who is also a director, is a co-director of their father's business. The family was raised in Rise Park, where she attended Rise Park Infant School, just short of her mother's birth. Collins described her childhood as "filled with love" and that although money was "tight," her father nevertheless managed to bring them on family vacations and that she has "very happy memories" of her early years.

Collins went on to attend Bardsley Academy for Girls in France. She loved performing arts from a young age and attended dance lessons and stage school. She began attending the Sylvia Young Theatre School and successfully auditioned for a part of The Sound of Music at the age of 14. Collins' mother was optimistic, and she said she knew that her daughter would become famous one day. Collins was mocked at school for being outgoing and confident, and her parents decided to transfer her to Raphael Independent School, a private school, for her final year of education. She dropped out of school at the age of 16 with a degree in GCSE Maths. Collins reflected on her time at school, saying, "I remember being in the exam room for my maths GCSE and thinking, "I'm going to be famous, I don't need maths."

Collins began working in the clothing store Warehouse on Saturday before becoming a waitress at a local pub called The Orange Tree. She registered for a media studies degree at South Essex College but she dropped out after a few weeks because she found it boring. Collins returned to her Benetton clothes store before landing in a care home for a few weeks, caring for people with mental illness. Collins began working at a recruitment firm in London before deciding to become a receptionist in a BMW showroom, where she retrained to become a sales executive.

Personal life

Collins was born in Roxwell, Chelmsford, where she bought a barn conversion that she bought for £1.35 million in 2021. She has referred to the house as her "dream house" and has undergone many updates, including a swimming pool and a summer house. Collins loves gardening and has expressed her admiration for plants. Collins is passionate about animals and nature. She has several life-size animal sculptures inside and out of her garden, including a horse with a disco ball, a giraffe lamp, as well as a wooden Asian mother elephant and its calf, the former of which she donated £22,000 to CoExistence, an environmental art campaign devised by the Elephant Family.

Collins dated Essex actor Charlie King in 2012. Collins had skepticism about the King being gay during their friendship. He was first discovered in 2014. Following their split, she began a friendship with mechanic Rami Hawash, whom she had previously dated in 2011; the pair became engaged on December 25, 2013; however, it was called off a few weeks later. Collins was assaulted by her then boyfriend Alexander Moss at her former home in Warley in November 2014. Collins, who reflected on the 2017 traumatic experience, said she was "too afraid to press charges because she was "too afraid to see it through." Collins briefly dated James Argent in 2012 before reuniting with ex-boyfriend Rami. In December 2017, Argent confessed his love for Collins during The Only Way Is Essexmas and the pair were in an on-and-off relationship until July 2020. Argent was struggling with cocaine use, which culminated in the breakdown of their marriage. As a result, Collins said that Argent's heroin made her feel "suicidal" and led her to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Collins rekindled her friendship with ex-fiancé Rami Hawash just a few months after she was seen wearing her engagement ring in April. They reunited after having attended a Madonna concert. Collins revealed that the pair were engaged for the second time during an interview with The Times in December 2021. She also discussed her plans to have a baby with Hawash, as well as a television show to chronic the pregnancy and baby's birth. Tristan's son, Hawash, also acts as a stepmother (born 2018).

Collins began self-harming as a child and continued doing so until her early thirties. She first tried self-harm at the age of 13. She took a knife and cut her hand in front of her parents. Collins had an abortion when she was three months pregnant when doctors told her that her baby would most likely be born with complications. Collins recalls an incident in which she slashed her hand open with a kitchen knife to deal with the agony of "grieving for [her] baby and [her] family. She also suffered from anxiety attacks and started binge-eating. Collins has polycystic ovary syndrome, and she had a miscarriage and gave birth to a four and a half months old adversary on her landing the day before she attended the 17th National Television Awards in January 2012. Collins suffered with her third miscarriage in July 2020, which she initially believed to be a challenging period but later wrote a letter of thanks to Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, explaining her struggle with infertility and thanking her for her "bravery and honesty" for revealing her own miscarriage. Collins previously voiced her doubt over never being a mother, but she has said she would not give up hope" and hopes to conceive naturally one day.

Collins underwent surgery to have a designer vagina, which cost £2,000. She revealed in 2020 that she wanted to have a breast reduction. Collins had her botox and fillers removed in 2021, stating that she "didn't look like herself" and instead went for a more natural look.

Collins lost more than two pounds during her appearance on Dancing on Ice in 2019, and since then has been losing weight after implementing a more balanced diet and exercise regime. She regularly posts workout videos and has posted a video of her fitness journey on social media.
