Olubankole Wellington (born 27 March 1981), also known by his stage name Banky W and crediting in film as Banky Wellington, is a Nigerian singer, rapper, actor, and politician.

Early life

Olubankole Wellington was born in the United States on March 27th, 1981, to Nigerian parents. When he was five years old, his family returned to Nigeria. He began singing in his church choir at a young age.

Education

Wellington went to Lagos for his primary and secondary education and returned to further his tertiary studies at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, New York, United States, on a scholarship. When researching, he founded Empire Mates Entertainment (E.M.E.). He has also worked at Spectre. He left the United States for Nigeria in 2009 and established his own label in Lagos, importing musicians like Niyola, Shaydee Skales, and Wizkid. In 2005, he released Back in the Building, his first studio album. "0809ja for life" was his debut single. Ebute Metta He wrote Etisalat Nigeria's first theme song, "0809ja for life."

Personal life

Wellington married Adesua Etomi on 19 November 19th, 2017; the couple later had their white wedding in South Africa on November 25th. In 2017, he underwent a fruitful skin cancer surgery on his shoulder. In early 2021, Wellington and Adesua had a son. They kept the pregnancy private, surprising many people off guard when they learnt of the baby's arrival.

Wellington unveiled his new album "R&BW" on February 19, 2013, which featured several other artists, including Iyanya and Waje. "Lowkey" and "Yes/No" are two of the album's first two singles.

E.M.E. was being discontinued as a record label, according to Wellington, who said the label would proceed as a talent management firm focusing on creative marketing, advertising, PR, and brand activities. Wellington announced DJ Xclusive, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, Tolu 'Tolu' Oniru, Tolu 'Toolz' Oniru, and his partner Adesua Etomi as the first group of clients of the rebranded firm.

Political career

Wellington declared on November 11, 2018, on the platform of the Modern Democratic Party, he intending to run for the Lagos' Eti-Osa Federal Constituency seat in Nigeria's House of Representatives.

Wellington lost the Eti-Osa Federal Constituency Elections to Babajide Obanikoro of the All Progressive Congress on February 23, 2019.

Wellington revealed decamped from the Modern Democratic Party to the People's Democratic Party, seeking the party's ticket to re-elect the Lagos Federal Constituency seat in Nigeria's House of Representatives ahead of the 2023 general election. Banky W won the People's Democratic Party ticket in June 2022 to run as the party bearer for the Eti Osa constituency ahead of the 2023 election.
