Bala was introduced by lyricist Arivumathi to director Balu Mahendra. He began working as a production assistant in a Balu Mahendra film. Bala later joined him as an assistant director in his films. Bala made his directorial debut with Sethu in 1999, giving Vikram, the film's lead actor, a break after being out of money in the Tamil film market for almost a decade without getting a hit or recognition.
