Film career

Bala was introduced by lyricist Arivumathi to director Balu Mahendra. He began working as a production assistant in a Balu Mahendra film. Bala later joined him as an assistant director in his films. Bala made his directorial debut with Sethu in 1999, giving Vikram, the film's lead actor, a break after being out of money in the Tamil film market for almost a decade without getting a hit or recognition. More than 60 distributors watched the film but decided against screening it due to its tragic ending. The film was released on a low budget without having any advertisements, but after the first days, it began to packed houses right from the word of mouth.' The film was supposed to have sparked a 'new wave,' after it received critical acclaim and became a hit. Its success resulted in the translations of Kannada (Huchcha), Telugu (Seshu), and Hindi (Tere Naam) languages.
