Prior Walter appeared in a production of Angels in America at the Royal National Theatre in London in 2017, for which he was nominated for an Olivier Award for Best Actor.

Early life

Andrew Russell Garfield was born in Los Angeles, California, on August 20, 1983. Lynn (née Hillman) was from Essex, England, and Richard Garfield, his father, is from California, is from Essex, England. Richard's parents were both from the United Kingdom. When he was three years old, Garfield's parents moved the family from Los Angeles to the United Kingdom, and he was born in Epsom, Surrey. Garfield had a religious upbringing. He is Jewish on his father's side and describes himself as a "Jewish artist." His paternal grandparents immigrated from Poland, Russia, and Romania, and the family's surname was originally "Garfinkel."

The parents of Garfield's parents operated a small interior-design firm. His mother was also a teaching assistant at a kindergarten and his father became the head coach of Guildford City Swimming Club. He has an older brother who works at Royal Brompton Hospital. During his youth, Garfield was a gymnast and a swimmer. He had intended to study finance but was drawn to acting at the age of 16, when a friend encouraged him to enroll in theatre studies at A-level because the class was only one student short of being able to run it. Priory Preparatory School in Banstead and later City of London Freemen's School in Ashtead, before completing at the Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London. He started his career at Starbucks, being moved between three separate shops in Golders Green and Hendon.

Personal life

Though Garfield identifies himself as Jewish, he has described himself as a "agnostic pantheist." "What was really simple was falling in love with Jesus Christ," he wrote after doing the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius of Loyola in Silence. "It was the most surprising thing" he said.

Garfield has dual citizenship in the United States and the United Kingdom. He told the Sunday Herald in 2009 that he felt "equally at home" in both countries and enjoyed "a varied cultural life." "I identify more as Jewish than anything" when asked again in 2019: "I identify more as Jewish than anything." I have a love-hate relationship with both countries and used to be extremely proud to have both passports. "I'm marginally proud" today, although I'm a little less proud." Garfield's primary residence is in North London near Hampstead Heath. On a podcast in 2021, Shaun Keaveny said he considers England home because that is where his family and friends are based.

Garfield does routinely give interviews about his work but does not go into detail about his personal life. During the film's production, Garfield began referring to his Emma Stone, the Amazing Spider-Man co-star. They were reported to have broken up in 2015, but no formal announcement was made. When asked about his sexuality, Garfield said he was heterosexual, but that "I have an openness to any urges that may arise within me at any time."

Lynne Garfield died of pancreatic cancer during her filming of The Eyes of Tammy Faye and then Tick, Tick... boom! Production was also started. He was able to fly home to be with her.

Garfield was appointed Ambassador of Sport for the Worldwide Orphanage Foundation in 2011.

Andrew Garfield Career

Career

When he was nine years old, Garfield began attending acting lessons in Guildford, Surrey, and appeared in a Bugsy Malone youth theatre performance. He also joined a small youth theatre workshop group in Epsom and completed theatre studies at A-level before continuing to study at the Central School of Speech and Drama in the United Kingdom. Since graduating in 2004, he began performing mainly in stage acting. He received the Outstanding Newcomer Award at the 2006 Evening Standard Theatre Awards in 2004, and again in 2004 for his appearance in Kes at Manchester's Royal Exchange Theatre (where he also appeared in Romeo the year before). Garfield made his British television debut in 2005, when he appeared in the Channel 4 youth drama Sugar Rush. When he appeared in the BBC's Doctor Who series "Daleks in Manhattan" and "Evolution of the Daleks," he attracted public attention in 2007. It was "an honor" to be a part of Doctor Who, Garfield said. In October 2007, he was named one of Variety's "10 Actors to Watch" list. In November 2007, he made his American film debut as an American university student in the ensemble drama Lions for Lambs, starring Tom Cruise, Meryl Steedy, and Robert Redford. Garfield wrote in 2007: "I'm just lucky to be working on the same project as them," Garfield said. Wesley Morris' review for the Boston Globe called Garfield's work "a willing punching bag for the movie's jabs and low blows."

He portrayed a notorious murderer trying to find new life after jail in Channel 4's Boy A, released in November 2007. The actor was voted the Best Actor award by the British Academy in 2008. "There is no doubt about the intelligence and sensitivity" of Garfield's portrayal, according to Amy Biancolli of the Houston Chronicle. Christy DeSmith of the Minneapolis Star Tribune echoed Biancolli's words, quoting his "detailed expressions" as an example. "Garfield always captures his passion," John Hartl wrote in The Seattle Times. Joe Morgenstern, a Wall Street Journal analyst, called Garfield's performance "phenomenal," noting that "he "makes room for the many and various aspects of Jack's personality." He appeared in The Other Boleyn Girl in 2008 and was named one of the Berlin International Film Festival's Shooting Stars. Garfield appeared in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and the Red Riding television trilogy in 2009. Garfield's Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times thought so, with a standout appearance in the latter.

Garfield co-starred Carey Mulligan and Keira Knightley in Mark Romanek's dystopian science-fiction drama Never Let Me Go, an adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro's 2005 book of the same name. "There's a sense of fear that runs through these children, especially Tommy, because he's so tactile and feeling as well as animalistic," he said. Garfield was attracted to the film based on the existence of the story's existential concerns. He said that being a part of Never Let Me Go was "just a wish to come true." He said that the scenes in which his character—unable to contain his rage—erupts with a wail—weren't "intense" for him. "I believe those screams are inside of us, and we should not have a chance to let them out." He was named Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of a well-meaning, but dim young man trapped in a love triangle in the 2010 Saturn Award. Owen Gleiberman praised the lead cast's appearances, saying, "these three three characters all act with a spooky, haunted innocence that gets under your skin." Garfield is "the true find" in comparison to Mulligan and Knightley, according to Scott Bowles of USA Today, who wrote for USA Today, Garfield is "the true find" in comparison to Mulligan and Knightley's "not to mention" never Let Me Go.

Garfield co-starred opposite Jesse Eisenberg in The Social Network, a comedy based on Facebook's founders. Garfield wrote, "No one knows who Eduardo Saverin is" and I don't either." Of course, the fact that he's a real human being breathing on this Earth somewhere gives me a whole new sense of responsibility. Initially, David Fincher, the film's producer, had met Garfield under the auspices of him portraying Mark Zuckerberg after being referred to him by Mark Romanek. Fincher, on the other hand, did not like Garfield's "incredible emotional connection to his kind of core humanity" better suited for the role of Saverin. Garfield's appearance was well-reced; he received more accolades and numerous awards, including BAFTA nominations for Best Actor in a Supporting Role and Rising Star, as well as a Golden Globe award for Best Supporting Role. "Everyone knows he's one of the very best things about The Social Network," Mark Kermode of the BBC expressed surprise that Garfield was disregarded for an Academy Award nomination. Joe Morgenstern wrote in The Wall Street Journal that the role was depicted with "tony and rueful charm" throughout its career. Garfield delivered "a sadness that raises the emotional stakes in a film," Rolling Stone said. "Keep your eyes on Garfield," he said, "the vein of a film that might otherwise be without one."

In Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), a spin on the Spider-Man film series, Garfield was cast as Spider-Man/Peter Parker, opposite Emma Stone as his love interest. Garfield's casting was a "massive challenge in several ways," including the need to make the character "authentic" and "live and breathe in a new way." Peter was a person he could relate to, and he said that his character had a lot of influence on him since he was a youth. He investigated the movement of athletes and spiders in order to incorporate them, as well as yoga and pilates. Garfield's appearance at The Amazing Spider-Man earned a worldwide total of $72,216,557, and was generally well received. Peter Bradshaw of the Guardian drew his role as the "definitive Spider-Man" in his role, and CNN's Tom Charity praised his "combination of fresh-faced innocence, agitation, and wry humour."

Biff Loman made his Broadway debut in the revival of Death of a Salesman in March 2012. Garfield had successfully "exposed the raw ache of Biff's solitude," according to David Rooney of The New York Times. Garfield was nominated for the Best Featured Actor in a Play for his performance. Garfield appeared on Saturday Night Live and appeared in a music video for Arcade Fire's song "We Exist" two years ago, portraying a trans woman. He co-produced and starred in the 2014 independent drama 99 Homes, as well as reprised the titular role in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Following a contract between Sony and Marvel Studios to incorporate the Spider-Man character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, sequels to the earlier film were cancelled, and Tom Holland took over the role in a reboot. Yuri M. Marusik and Alireza Zamani honoured Garfield's role by naming a new species of crevice weaver spider after him.

Garfield appeared in two films of 2016 Martin Scorsese's drama Silence and Mel Gibson's war film Hacksaw Ridge, despite a year absence from film. Garfield played Sebastio Rodrigues, a Portuguese Jesuit priest who goes to Japan to spread his faith in the former, based on Shaku End's 1966 book of the same name. Garfield went on a silent retreat in Wales for a year as James Martin learned to be a Jesuit priest. The film's strenuous principal photography took place in Taiwan, and Garfield lost 40 pounds (18 kg) to achieve his character's physical appearance. Kate Taylor of The Globe and Mail disapproved the film, saying Garfield is "fully resolute and pleasantly anguished as the missionary Rodrigues," but Garfield's "ethical conviction or the agony of religious doubt proves vain." It earned less than half of its $50 million budget at the box office. Hacksaw Ridge, on the other hand, was a commercial success, grossing over $175.3 million globally. Desmond Doss, a combat medic in World War II who was the first conscient objector in America to be named the Medal of Honor, was depicted in Garfield's book. Brian Truitt wrote for USA Today, describing the film as "brute intense and elegantly crafted"; he thinks Garfield added depth to his work, and praised him for his role as Doss, which he likes as "simple sweetness" and "steadfast mettle" in his role. For Hacksaw Ridge, he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor.

Prior Walter appeared in Tony Kushner's two-part play Angels in America, and the performance was televised live to cinemas around the world in summer 2017. It was produced by Marianne Elliott and co-starred Nathan Lane, James McArdle, Russell Tovey, and Denise Gough. Garfield's "transformative and unrecognisable in places, completely inhabiting camp, laconic, frightened, and absolutely loveable Prior Walter," according to Paul T Davis of The British Theatre Guide. He was nominated for the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor.

Garfield's only film release of 2017 was the biographical Breathe, in which he played Robin Cavendish, a young man paralysed by polio. In preparation, he worked with people who had polio and collaborated closely with Cavendish's wife and son. Despite an exceptional tale, Stephen Dalton of The Hollywood Reporter said that Garfield had glossed over Cavendish's life, and that, "limited by a role that limits him to little more than nodding and grinning." Garfield reprised his role as Priorities in America's transfer to Broadway for an eighteen weeks limited engagement at the Neil Simon Theatre in March 2018. Peter Marks praised the work for The Washington Post, saying that "nothing [Garfield's] done prepares you for the dexterity of his Prior" and that his role as the "persuasive moral center of the piece." For his performance, he received the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play.

The premiere of Garfield's next film, the David Robert Mitchell-directed neo-noir Under the Silver Lake, was held at the Cannes Film Festival this year. He played Sam, an unemployed and wayward young man who sets out on a quest for his neighbor who has mysteriously vanished. Richard Lawson, a writer for Vanity Fair, found Garfield to be "great in the role, performing nimble, subtle pieces of physical comedy, and hinting at the creepy, menacing side of Sam." Garfield appeared in Gia Coppola's drama Mainstream, alongside Maya Hawke and Jason Schwartzman, which had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in 2020.

Garfield appeared in The Eyes of Tammy Faye, a film festival about the televangelists Tammy Faye and Jim Bakker, which had its world premiere at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival. Jonathan Larson appeared in Lin-Manuel Miranda's film version of Tick, Tick... Boom! Miranda had not seen Garfield perform on stage in Angels, the United States' first time. Garfield, who had not sing professionally, undertook vocal preparation for the role. On Netflix, the film was released. Garfield received the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, as well as a nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. Despite repeatedly denied public statements to the contrary, Garfield reprised his role as Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Spider-Man: No Way Home, starring Tom Holland and predecessor Tobey Maguire. Garfield characterized his time on the film as "joyful" and added that his Spider-Man version gave him "closure" and brought him "closure." He also said that if the role felt right, he would be open to returning to it.

Garfield was included on Time magazine's annual list of the world's 100 most influential people in 2022. He appeared in Dustin Lance Black's miniseries Under the Banner of Heaven, an extension of Jon Krakauer's book of the same name, in the same year. Vulture's Kathryn VanArendonk praised Garfield's "most tender portrayal" of Jeb Pyre, a Mormon detective. His role earned him the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Film.
