Club career

Matri, a native of Sant'Angelo Lodigiano, Lombardy, a 30 km away from Milan's city, began his career at Milan. He made his debut against Piacenza on May 24, 2003, as Milan rested the majority of its regular starting eleven in anticipation of the 2003 UEFA Champions League Final, which was defeated four days later. In the 71st minute, Matri partnered with Michele Piccolo and was replaced by Roberto Bortolotto; he did not score. Matri spent the whole year with Milan's Primavera (under-20) team, but did not make it to the senior team. He served on loan to Prato (along with Piccolo) and Lumezzane, where he appeared in 64 total Serie C1 matches between 2004 and 2005.

Matri was loaned to Rimini of Serie B in the 2006–07 season. He worked with Adrián Ricciuti, Jeda, and Davide Moscardelli, all of whom would play in Serie A later this season, so he began from the bench. Matri scored four goals in Serie B, all between March and April 2007, including a double in Brescia, a goal against Treviso, and the goal that sparked a home derby against A.C. Cesena. In the 2006–07 Coppa Italia, he scored a goal.

Matri was sold to Cagliari in a joint venture agreement in June 2007, as part of David Suazo's transfer to Milan. (Suazo eventually joined Internazionale, a city rival.) Matri partnered with Robert Acquafresca, which Internazionale sent him to Cagliari as part of the Suazo contract. The pair scored 16 goals for the team, ahead of midfielders Pasquale Foggia and Daniele Conti, who all scored five goals. Jeda and Joaqun Larrivey, the team's replacements, scored three goals in half season and one goal in the full season. Cagliari purchased an additional €2 million in June 2008 for an additional €2 million.

As Jeda and Acquafresca were in better shape throughout the season, Matri became the third-choice striker in the upcoming season. He did score, but only 11 of them as a starter.

Matri was the other half of a starting pair with Jeda, with new signing Nenê always as a replacement after Acquafresca's departure to Genoa. Matri's was the team's top scorer, scoring 12 goals in the league, ahead of Nenê's seven goals and Jeda's six goals. Matri was reunited with Acquafresca at the start of the 2010–11 Serie A season, as the former Cagliari had re-joined Cagliari. In 21 games (only 11 starts), Matri, Acquafresca and Nenê scored 11 goals in 21 games, three goals in 21 games (only 11 starts), and four times in 20 games (14 starts), respectively, before Matri's departure.

Matri transferred to Juventus in the final hours of the January transfer window, with Lorenzo Ariaudo's registration rights, worth €2.5 million, being transferred to Cagliari. Juventus will also have the ability to buy the player at the end of the season for an additional €15.5 million, potentially making him worth €18 million in total. Juventus' closing down vacancies as a result of striker Fabio Quagliarella's season-ending injury, as well as the loan of Amauri to Parma, which was a result of the striker's loan of Amauri.

Matri made his Juventus debut only two days after being in a league match against Palermo, earning a 2–1 victory for the Sicilian opponents. On his return to Cagliari, Matri scored his first two goals on his return to Cagliari on February 5th, when he latched onto a Milo Krasi pass and sped into the first corner for the first and volleyed again for the second, refusing to celebrate on both occasions. Matri scored a header and defeating Inter 1–0 in his third goal for Juventus in the prestigious Derby d'Italia. In the three upcoming matches against Lecce, Bologna, and Milan, he was unable to score.

In the upcoming match, he scored another brace, but Juventus was unable to gain just one point against newly promoted Cesena in a 2–2 away draw match. Matri scored his sixth goal for Juventus against Roma on April 4th, a 2-0 victory for Juventus. In the upcoming match, he scored one goal, assisting the Bianconeri in gaining the full three points against Genoa. Matri scored nine goals for Juve during the second half of the season, fourth-most in Serie A, following his 11 goals with Cagliari during the first half of the season. Matri officially signed for Juventus on a long-term contract that saw the club pay the pre-agreed €15.5 million transfer fee. He has signed a deal that will keep him ties to Juventus until June 30, 2015.

Juventus reported on April 2nd, 2012, that Matri had been added two more years to his current deal as of June 2017. He won the 2011-12 Serie A championship under new coach Antonio Conte, scoring ten goals in Serie A this season and also qualifying for the 2012 Coppa Italia final with the club. In a 1–1 away draw at the San Siro on February 25, he scored Juventus' equalizer against title opponents Milan on February 25, 2012.

Matri began winning the 2012 Supercoppa Italiana over Napoli in the following season. In a 3–0 away victory over Celtic in the round of 16; he scored his first UEFA Champions League goal in the tournament but was denied by eventual champions Bayern Munich. Matri won his second straight Serie A title during his third season with the club. Juventus defeated Lazio 4–0 on Sunday, beating him for his second Supercoppa Italiana with Juventus at the start of the next season.

Milan acquired Matri from Juventus for a four-year contract on August 30, 2013. He was given the number 9 shirt on his debut in a 3–1 win over former club Cagliari on September 1, 2013 and made his season debut. In a 3–2 away loss to Parma on October 27, he scored his first goal with the team on October 27th.

Fiorentina bought Milan on loan from Milan in January 2014, despite the fact that Giuseppe Rossi and Mario Gómez were injured. Matri was bought with the intention of filling the gap left by injuries to forwards Rossi, the top scorer in Serie A at the time with 14 goals and a German international Gómez. Fiorentina's 2013 Coppa Italia Finalists announced he spent 21 appearances and five goals in Serie A. He returned to Milan at the end of the season.

Genoa reported the season-long loan contract with Matri from Milan on July 11, 2014. On September 14, 2014, he made his 2014-15 Serie A debut against former loan company Fiorentina, joining Fiorentina as a replacement for Mauricio Pinilla. In a 2–2 away draw to Hellas Verona on September 24, he scored his first two goals for the club. In a 2–1 victory over Parma on October 5th, he scored Genoa's 100th career goal, and he scored his first Serie A goal of the season on October 26th in a 2–1 victory over Chievo. During the first half of the season with Genoa, he made 17 appearances and seven goals.

Juventus reported on February 2, 2015, that Matri from Milan would be loaned until the 2014-2015 season; half of his €2.5 million annual salary would be paid by Milan. Juventus defeated Lazio 21-0 in the 2015 Coppa Italia Final on May 20th after he scored the winning goal in extra time in extra time to give Juventus a 2–1 victory over Lazio.

After his loan at Juventus came due, Matri returned to Milan on June 30, 2015. Philippe Mexès made one of football's shortest substitutions on August 28 in a friendly against Real Madrid, making him take only five seconds in place of him.

On August 31, 2015, Matri was loaned to Lazio by Milan's loan. In his first minute for Lazio on September 13, he scored two goals in the 64th minute, followed by the 73rd minute to defeat Udinese 2–0.

Matri moved to Sassuolo on a permanent basis on August 16, 2016.

Matri joined Brescia on a single-season loan with the possibility of a second on September 2nd, the last day of the summer transfer window. His loan to Brescia was terminated by mutual consent on January 31, 2020; Sassuolo followed him.

Matri retired from football on May 6, 2020.

International career

Matri was the first call up for the Italian national team's friendly match against Germany on September 9, 2011. He made his international debut in a friendly match against Ukraine played in Kyiv, under new boss Cesare Prandelli's tenure, scoring his first goal for Italy in the 81st minute and scoring his first goal for Italy in the 81st minute, which Italy defeated 2–0.
