Adam Moffat Career

Career

Moffat began his time with the Scottish giants' youth teams before heading to Ross County in search of first team opportunities. He joined the Ross County first team under new coach Alex Smith, making his first team appearance in May 2005. Ross County fired Smith shortly after the 2004–05 season and brought in John Robertson as the boss. Moffat did not rank as well as his predecessor and Moffat's opportunities declined, so the new boss did not rate it as highly as he did.

Moffatt joined Elgin City of Scotland in the hopes of more playing time in the 2006–07 season. Moffat worked part time at a Gap store to make ends meet, because he would only make a few hundred pounds per game. In a 2–0 loss to Dumbarton on September 9, he made his debut for Elgin City. In a 2-1 loss to Berwick Rangers, Moffat scored his first goal for Elgin City on September 23rd. In a Scottish Cup match against Buckie Thistle on December 9, he scored the winner. Elgin City won by 2–1 over East Stirlingshire after he scored twice on 14 April. During the season, Moffat appeared in 29 appearances and scored 7 goals in all leagues. The team's season was a struggle, finishing second bottom in the table or 41st out of 42 Scottish league teams. Moffat considered moving from football to go to university when he was in Elgin, England.

Richard Huxford, one of Moffat's long-time mentors, called him as his season with Elgin City was coming to an end. Martin Rennie, a Huxford assistant, was the head coach of the Cleveland City Stars, a new team in the USL Second Division, the third tier of American soccer. Moffat decided to play in the United States for the summer and hoping to return to Scotland after the season. When Moffat lived with a host family while in Cleveland, she only made $600 a month.

Moffat and the Stars finished the regular season with just one loss in the league and a second-place finish, with Moffat scoring 8 goals and 2 assists. In the first round of the Harrisburg City Islanders, Cleveland will lose 1–0. Moffat was selected to the USL Second Division All-League First Team as a result of his good play during the season.

Moffat's good results for Cleveland attracted Sigi Schmid, then the head coach of MLS club Columbus Crew, who then invited Moffat to train with the team.
