Club career

Gera began his career with Harkány SE in 1996 and spent one year before joining Pécsi Mecsek FC.

Pécsi Mecsek in 1997 nabbed Gera. he made 87 appearances and scored 16 times during his three-year association with the club. Gera joined Ferencváros, Hungary's top-tier, on July 1, 2000, on a free transfer.

Gera played 115 league games and scored 32 goals during his four-year tenure at Ferencváros. He won the Hungarian league championship in 2001 and 2004, the Magyar Kupa in 2003 and 2004, and the Szuperkupa in 2004. When with the club, he received his first international call up.

Gera transferred from West Bromwich Albion, the English Premier League, to the United Kingdom for £1.5 million on July 30. He has signed a three-year deal with Albion, as well as a supplementary one-year option in the club's favour. Andy Johnson was given his Premier League debut against Blackburn Rovers in the 87th minute on August 14, 2004. The match was decided in a 1–1 draw. Gera scored his first goal of the season against West Ham United in a 2–2 draw during the 2009–10 Premier League season. Gera scored his second goal of the season at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea on December 28, 2009, when he hooked the ball over Petr ech from 12 yards after four minutes. Fulham lost the game 2–1. Despite this early goal, Fulham lost the game 2–1. Gera scored two goals in a man of the match debut against Juventus, Fulham winning 4–1. Fulham defeated Hamburger SV 21-0 in their first ever European final, with Gera providing the sole goal's assistance. After suffering a knee injury in a match against Queens Park Rangers on January 8, 2013, Gera will be out for the remainder of the season. Gera's deal with West Brom came to an end on July 1, 2013, making him a free agent for a brief period until he signed a new deal with the club for another year. After his deal came to an end, Gera left West Brom in 2014.

Gera defeated Ferencváros 2–1 on April 2nd, 2016 after losing to Debreceni VSC 2–1 at the Nagyerdei Stadion in the 2015–16 Nemzeti Bajnokság I season.

In the 2016 Magyar Kupa Final, he scored his only and winning goal against archrival jpest FC at the Groupama Arena on 7 May 2016.

International career

In a 2–1 loss to Switzerland on February 13, Gera earned his first international cap for Hungary's national team. He had played 63 games for Hungary, scoring 18 goals, up to 2009. Gera was dropped from the match squad by coach Erwin Koeman after arriving late at a team meeting. Gera resigned from the national team following the incident. Koeman's deal came to an end and the newly elected board of the Hungarian Football Federation named Sándor Egervári as the next national team coach on July 23, 2010. Gera returned to the national team against England on August 11, 2010 following a personal consultation with Egervári.

In a UEFA Euro 2012 qualifier match in Amsterdam, Gera scored twice against the Netherlands on March 29, 2011. In the 75th minute, he scored his first goal and his second in the 70th minute. Gera's hopes, on the other hand, were not strong enough when Hungary defeated 5-3. Hungary started their 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign in Andorra on September 7th; Gera scored the second goal. Hungary defeated Turkey 3–1 at home on October 16, 2012. Gera scored the third goal for Hungary.

Gera was selected vice-captain for the Hungarian squad for Euro 2016 in France on May 31. Gera took the first group match over Austria in Hungary's first match of the tournament on June 14th. He drew 1-1 against Iceland at the Stade Vélodrome, Marseille, four days later, on June 18th. He played in the last group match against Portugal on June 22nd, scoring the first goal from 25 yards out with his weaker foot. He became the second-oldest goalscorer and the oldest goalscorer from open play at a European Championship, aged 37 years and 257 days; Austrian Ivica Vasti is the oldest scorer, with a record of 38 years and 257 days. In a UEFA online fan poll, Gera's dream was later named the "Goal of the Tournament."
