Nacho Novo Life

Ignacio Javier Gómez Novo (Spanish pronunciation: [ij xaje]; born 26 March 1979) is a Spanish footballer who plays as a forward.

In 2001 and Dundee, he went from Huesca to Scottish club Raith Rovers and Dundee a year later. He went to Rangers for £450,000 in July 2004. He scored 25 goals and won a league and League Cup double during his first season with the club. He had to wait four years before winning the league championship in the 2008–09 season, where he also scored the winning goal in the 2009 Scottish Cup Final, which earned him his second double with the Ibrox club.

He had a few short spells at clubs in Spain, Poland, Scotland, England, England, the United States, and Northern Ireland following his time with Rangers.

Early life

Novo was born in Ferrol, Galicia, Italy. Ricardo Gómez Varela, his father, was a centre half of Real Betis who spent one year in the city.

Personal life

When playing in Scotland in 2004, Novo first met Donna Clark, and the couple were engaged a year later. They had a son together, Javier, before marrying in February 2015, where Novo's ex-Rangers teammate, Marvin Andrews, served as pastor.

When playing for a team of Rangers legends at the AOK Masters in Berlin in January 2018, 38-year-old Novo sustained a heart attack. He was rushed to the hospital and underwent emergency surgery.

Nacho Novo Career

Club career

In July 2001, Novo joined Raith Rovers from SD Huesca. On August 4, he made his scoring debut against Airdrieonians and netted the winner in a Challenge Cup match against Alloa Athletic three days later. When playing against Partick Thistle, Novo saw himself dismissed in only his third game for Raith.

Despite this setback, he continued to score regularly in the Scottish First Division, scoring doubles against St Mirren and twice against Falkirk. During his first season in Scotland, Novo scored a total of 22 goals in 38 appearances.

Dundee's goal scoring record attracted the attention of a Scottish Premier League player who signed him for £100,000 in July 2002. He made his Scottish Premier League debut in a 1–1 draw with Hearts on August 3, 2002. On August 17th, Novo scored his first and second goals for the club against Dunfermline Athletic, but the team's captain was suspended in the final moments of the game for lifting his foot at Pars defender Scott Wilson. He went on to score another seven goals to bring the season to an end with a score of nine.

Novo returned to form in his second season, scoring four goals in the UEFA Cup, one against Perpeta, Italy's former Serie A team, bringing him to a season-low total total figure of 25. Several clubs, including Celtic and Rangers, were attracted by this style. Celtic had a £500,000 bid accepted but was unable to decide on terms with the actor, claiming that Novo did not have the "necessary degree of commitment" when signing negotiations.

On July 6, 2004, Novo signed for Rangers for £450,000. He was given the number 10 shirt that had been vacated by Michael Mols. He scored 25 goals in his first season with Rangers, including the one against Hibernian that earned them the league championship. On August 7, 2004, he made his Rangers debut in a Scottish Premier League match against Aberdeen. In Rangers' 2–1 loss to Russian side CSKA Moscow on August 10, his first goal appeared in his second appearance, netting.

Novo failed to score in his next eight appearances after his first goal, and he was booted out of the starting lineup. In a league match against his former employers Dundee, he appeared as a 66th-minute replacement. Rangers defeated Rangers by 2–0 after Novo scored two goals in as many minutes, despite the fact that he was a regular on the team.

Novo suffered his fifth metatarsal, which had barred him from serving for many months, at the start of the 2005–06 season. He struggled to score in the twenty games he played the remainder of the season, being more as a winger than a striker due to Kris Boyd's absence. His three goals against Celtic, Falkirk, and Cypruspriot side Anorthos Famagusta had goals.

With Alex McLeish's departure and the arrival of Frenchman Paul Le Guen, Novo seemed to have left Rangers. However, a transfer to Coventry City, England's First Division club, fell through on transfer deadline day. Novo's first appearances were sporadic, he appeared in the first game of the season and then waited seven weeks for his second, but after a string of poor results, injuries, and his solid performances for the reserves, he rejoined the first team. It was his first goal of the season and in more than a year, he scored a 3–2 UEFA Cup triumph over Livorno on October 19, 2006. Novo came off the bench to score a late winner against St Mirren in a 3–2 victory. He then started his game, Motherwell held Rangers to a 1–1 draw with Novo named Man of the Match. His resurgent form came to a halt against Heart of Midlothian, Maccabi Haifa, and Auxerre. When Le Guen was recalled with Walter Smith, Novo remained a regular.

The signings of strikers in the summer of 2007 resulted in increased competition for attacking positions, and the majority of Novo's appearances in the early months of the season were as a replacement. In a 3–0 victory over Rangers on October 20, he started the first Old Firm derby match of the season and scored twice. Rangers were expected to give Novo a one-year extension to his existing deal, which was set to expire in July 2008. However, Novo said he would leave the club if he was not given a longer term. He was later offered a two-year contract extension until the summer of 2010, and he signed the agreement on December 21, 2007.

He won the first shoot-out against Fiorentina on May 1, 2008, propelling Rangers to the 2008 UEFA Cup Final. During the 2007–08 season, Novo was suspended twice, both in league games before reaching the finals, indicating that he missed both the 2008 League Cup final and the 2008 Scottish Cup finals due to suspension.

Novo was used almost entirely as a substitute during the 2008-2009 season. In the 2009 Scottish Cup Final, he came off the bench to score the winning goal after only being on the field for 28 seconds.

He won both the league and Scottish League Cup, scoring nine times, but mainly as a substitute, appearing in 14 league games. Novo did not want to sign a new deal because he was not getting enough starting opportunities.

On March 30, 2014, Novo, Fernando Ricksen, and Lee McCulloch were inducted into the Rangers Hall of Fame, along with Fernando Ricksen and Lee McCulloch.

Novo signed Sporting de Gijón, a La Liga team, in May 2010 for a two-year contract. Novo was released to clubs in the summer of 2011 after a difficult first season in Spain, but with a return to Scotland being mooted. Craig Brown, Aberdeen's manager, later said he turned down the opportunity to sign Novo but that was later denied by the player's agent.

Javier Clemente, a sports manager, called Novo "a coward" and accused of "showing no commitment to the club in the times of need," and tore up Novo's deal. Clemente also states, "We came into the dressing room and told the rest of the players that if we had any other cowards we might have to leave."

Novo signed a 6-month deal with Legia Warsaw on February 16, 2012. He made his debut against l'sk Wroc, 26 February, and was forced to be substituted in the 59th minute with his team leading 3–0 and Legia winning 4–0. Novo made 11 League and 3 Cup appearances for Legia, scoring once against Arka Gdynia in the Polish Cup semi-finals.

Novo returned to Spain in July 2012 to rejoin Huesca's Second division side, where he spent two years between 1999 and 2001. Novo's second stint at the club was less fruitful than his first, scoring only 6 league goals. Novo was sent off in November 2012 after scoring in a 2–1 win over Guadalajara for gestures directed at the crowd. Novo denied his innocence, saying that the 'gestures' were in fact a "dedication" to his late mother. At the end of the season, Huesca was recalled, and Novo became a free agent.

In October 2013, Novo agreed to a short-term loan with Scottish Championship club Greenock Morton, a deal that was not set to run until January 2014. However, Novo was suspended from his employment ahead of schedule on December 24th after a disappointing return of only one goal, as well as Morton's at the bottom of the Championship.

Novo signed a short-term deal with Football League One side Carlisle United on February 11, 2014. After appearing in only six matches, he was released in May following their relegation.

Novo was signed by Carolina RailHawks of USL Pro on September 11, 2014.

It was announced on July 26, 2016, that Novo would join Glentoran's Northern Ireland Football League team. Novo had been warned by police that he was in danger from dissident republicans only a few weeks after arriving in Belfast. He was suspended for the remainder of his season after a six-game suspension against Crusaders in January. In May 2017, he was suspended after scoring a total of 4 goals in 28 games.

Novo had hoped to transition to a teaching position after leaving Glentoran, but by the end of 2017, Novo had announced plans to open a Rangers-themed bar in Glasgow.

International career

Novo was never selected for the Spain national team, but he has played for Galicia in 2008 and made his debut against Iran in a 2008 friendly against Iran, arriving in his homeland just an hour before the game started after playing for Rangers against Celtic earlier in the day. He scored two goals and was left to the Galician fans' acclaim.

It was announced on October 24th that Novo would be selected by the Scottish national team as he was eligible to obtain a British passport after living in Scotland for eight years. This resulted in a lot of backlash in Scotland over whether Novo, who was born in Spain and has no Scottish parents or grandparents, should be chosen by Scotland. However, it soon became clear that the Home Nations would continue to honor a deal in whichby any player chosen by England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, or Wales would have to have a blood link to that country or have undergone five years compulsory training within it. Novo will not be allowed to play for Scotland as a result of this contract.
