Early life
Xavier Villaurrutia was born in 1903 in Mexico City. He studied in the Escuela Nacional Preparatoria (National Preparatory School) and in the Escuela de Jurisprudencia (Jurisprudence School). He felt a particular affinity to writing during that time, so he decided to dedicate his life to writing fiction.
He joined the Contemporáneos in 1928 (Contemporaries). He was given a scholarship to study theatre at Yale University in 1935. He returned to Mexico in 1937 and began working for Letras de Mexico, the local newspaper.
In 1927, they co-founded Ulises, alongside Salvador Novo.
