Career
Von D appeared on two seasons of Miami Ink, the reality TV show taped at 305 Ink in Miami for cable network TLC. After fellow artist Darren Brass broke his elbow, she was denied the opportunity to tattoo him, she was given the opportunity to attend the exhibition. While on the show, she had a falling out with Ami James, leading to her decision to abandon the store and the show.
She then developed her own TLC series, LA Ink, which chronicled her time at her tattoo shop, High Voltage Tattoo in Hollywood, California. With a total of 400, she tied for the most tattoos given by a single individual in 24 hours on the show. It was launched in December 2007 and it featured a Von D-designed logo for Los Angeles' city of Los Angeles, with proceeds going to the children's blindness charity Vitamin Angels. Ink ran four seasons, ending September 15, 2011; TLC announced the cancellation on August 18, 2011. Von D has stated openly that the cancellation was due to her decision not to continue doing the program.
High Voltage Tattoo, compiling her artworks and tattoos, was published in January 2009 and ranked #6 on the New York Times Best Seller list. "Not an autobiography," Von D wrote of the book, "because I'm too young to do that." But this is just sort of like a photo-driven summary of my artistry as an artist. So, you see everything from my drawings when I was six to tattoos that have never been seen" before. The Tattoo Chronicles, an illustrated diary chronicling a year in her life, was published on October 26, 2010 and ranked number two on "Hardcover Advice & Misc." Amazon's top-seller list.
Von D created and introduced a make-up line for Sephora in 2008. Each year, she introduces new collections and has expanded her range to include fragrances. The Art of Elysium charitable group was benefited by her new American Beauty Art Tour's fundraising in 2012. All products in the line would be reformulated to be vegan, she revealed in June 2016. Project Chimps, a line that provides services to retired research chimpanzees, was released in August 2016.
Her makeup line was criticized after the introduction of "Selektion" lipstick, because it was deemed controversial and insensitive in the word's native Germany, where it was a term used for Nazis who chose who would be sent to work or death upon arrival to concentration camps during World War II. The lipstick's name was changed to "Beloved" after the fallout. The choice of "Selektion" drew notice of other ostensible activities; the Forward called her "anti-Jew." When Von D named a lipstick "Celebutard," Sephora quickly recalled the lipstick and released an apology, but she was chastised once more.
Von D is the promoter of the MusInk Tattoo Convention and Music Festival, which began in 2008. Musink is a Southern California all-ages tattoo, music, and art festival.
Von D opened Wonderland Gallery, an art gallery and boutique gallery in the space next door to High Voltage Tattoo on September 2, 2010. In fall 2011, she introduced the clothing lines KVD Los Angeles and Kat Von D Los Angeles, with the latter increasing internationally the following year.
Von D provided the female vocals to the song "Rosary Blue" on X, a 2012 studio album by the Finnish gothic rock band The 69 Eyes. Dave Grohl and producer Danny Lohner had finished two tracks of an album she had written about as early as 2011.
On the album "Black Leather," she recorded vocals for the electronic music band Prayers, and appeared in the band's video for the song.
In 2018, she worked with Rooney Mara, Sia, Sadie Sink, and Joaquin Phoenix to narrate Chris Delforce's animal rights film Dominion. The 2018 Award of Excellence for Narration was given to her by the Hollywood International Independent Documentary Awards for her contribution to the film. On the 2018 album Alive in New Light by IAMX, Von D appears on three tracks. In the album "Black Blood, Red Kiss," she appeared on synthwave band Death All Day's "Dark All Day."
Von D's namesake beauty brand had been sold to Kendo Brands, LVMH's affiliate. "KVD Vegan Beauty" will be rebranded as the brand's "KVD Vegan Beauty" will be rebranded. According to the company, "Kindness, Vegan Beauty, and Discover (and Doing Good)" stands for "Kindness, Vegan Beauty, and Discover." On Tuesday, 2nd March 2021, KVD Beauty" was a rebrand, where KVD stands for "Kara," "Veritas," "Decora." According to "Value," "truth," and "Beauty," respectively.
