Vincent John Cusano (born August 6, 1952), also known as Vinnie Vincent, is an American guitarist and singer.
He is a former member of Kiss, a rock band from 1982 to mid-1984 during the band's transition from 1973-1983 makeup period.
During an interview with MTV in September 1983, Vincent became the first member to wear a unique makeup/costume combination as the protagonist of The Ankh Warrior (a Paul Stanley invention).
Vinnie Vincent Invasion, the leader of his own band, was also the founder.
Early life
Vincent John Cusano was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and the son of Theresa "Terri" (Ferraro) and Alfonso Cusano, musicians. Both of his parents were of Italian descent. He began playing guitar at an early age and was inspired by bluegrass and rock and roll. Cusano's first exposure to working with internationally recognized artists was as part of the band "Respect." This resulted in Epic Records' 1977 release of a similar name. It was recorded at Sound Ideas recording studios in New York City in 1980. Vincent retired to Los Angeles, California, where he became a staff songwriter for the television series Happy Days and Joanie Loves Chachi. Many of the collection songs were written on Vincent's acoustic guitar while dining at the Cunninghams' kitchen table on the Happy Days set during off-time from the show's rehearsal schedule. Vincent has described the times spent at the Paramount lot as "good days." Vincent has performed with Dan Hartman, Warrior, Hitchhikers, and Heat as far back as 1970, according to the website "Kiss Related Recordings."
Personal life
Vincent was married to AnnMarie Peters and has twin daughters with her. AnnMarie was killed in 1998 after she and Vincent divorced. In 1996, Vincent married Diane Kero, one of Ace Frehley's ex-girlfriends who attended a Kiss convention in Chicago the previous year. Before her death on January 13, 2014, the two lived in Smyrna, Tennessee, until their deaths on January 13, 2014. Diane died of alcoholism at the age of 47.
Career
Vincent was brought on as the replacement for guitarist Ace Frehley after being introduced to the band by songwriter Adam Mitchell. Vincent's personality complimented Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, allowing him to play lead guitar on six of the nine tracks on the Creatures of the Night album as well as co-writing three. Vincent returned to the studio with Kiss after a commercially disappointing Creatures of the Night/Tenth Anniversary tour, which culminated on a high at what turned out to be the "last" makeup show (and Kiss' biggest audience audience), at Maracan Stadium, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil). His output was fruitful, with eight co-writes out of ten songs on the album (a first for any member before Bruce Kulick's nine out of 12 on Carnival of Souls and Stanley's 10 out of 13 on Monster).
Although appearing on Creatures of the Night as a session musician before being named as Frehley's replacement in December 1982, Vincent, for all the public, was the official guitarist in Kiss and appeared on all the lead guitar tracks on Lick it Up. With Rick Derringer recording the solo on the first track, a "ghost player" was expected to perform on the album, something was a common occurrence for former guitarist Frehley.
Although Vincent performed well with Kiss, he refused to sign a labor deal that put the company's relationship with Simmons/Stanley at a breaking point. This arose as a result of controversies surrounding his membership in the band and compensation (some reports indicate that Vincent had requested for, and had flatly denied, a share of the band's gross proceeds). As a result, Vincent never officially joined the group. He eventually left after the North American leg of the "Lick It Up" tour, which was later on. Mark St. John had him replaced by him. Despite being on bad terms, Vincent was later used by Kiss as a songwriter on the 1992 album Revenge, appearing on the songs "Unholy," "Heart Of Chrome," and "I Just Wanna." Vincent and Stanley both fell out of favor with Simmons and Stanley after the two brothers said that Vincent would begin "making all sorts of crazy calls and pulling the same old stuff all over again."
Kiss released a very deluxe multi disc version of the Creatures of the Night album in 2022, which included demos and outtakes with Vincent as guitarist and songwriter, as well as two complete CDs of live recordings from the Night's first officially released live recordings with Vinnie Vincent.
Vincent spent a year in Europe after separating from Kiss in mid-1984, including a trip to Mora, Sweden's small town Mora. Vinnie Vincent Invasion began in 1986 and All Systems Go in 1988, with former Journey singer Robert Fleischman among others. In 1989, the band formed itself. Mark Slaughter and bassist Dana Strum, the band's drummer, formed Slaughter, shortly after that.
In 1996, Vincent released Euphoria, a solo EP from the studio sessions he did in 1990 (some claim 1989-1991), again with Robert Fleischman on vocals. Vincent, in addition to playing all the guitars, performed bass and did the drum programming under the name of "V. Meister." Andre LaBelle provided drum tracks to the CD, but the CD was lost due to Vincent's drum kit. On the bootleg Guitarmaggedon/Guitars from Hell CD, LaBelle appeared on several tracks other than the Euphoria EP.
SplitScreen Entertainment released a tribute album titled Kiss My Ankh: A Tribute To Vinnie Vincent Vincent on August 27, 2008. The album features recent recordings of songs from Vincent's time with Kiss and the Vinnie Vincent Invasion. Steve Brown of Trixter, Troy Patrick Farrell of White Lion, T.J. Racer of Nitro, Robert Fleischman's band, Sheldon Tarsha of Adler's Appointment, and rock and roll comedian C.C. Banana, a parody of the Kiss song "Unholy" (rewritten as a roast of Danger Danger vocalist Ted Poley), is a singer from Banana.
Vinnie Vincent decided to attend the 2018 Atlanta Kiss Expo in January after 22 years of being off the radar. Vincent lived up to one at the sold-out expo, performing a four-track set, as well as original VVI vocalist Robert Fleischman's appearance at "Back on the Streets" where he was joined by original VVI vocalist Robert Fleischman. Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley are among the family's he loves, wishing them nothing but the best, according to him. Vincent decided to appear with Simmons on stage in April 2018, the first time they had met in person in over two decades, following several e-mail exchanges with Gene Simmons. He conducted multiple question-and-answer sessions with fans during Eddie Trunk's first interview in over two decades.
Vinnie would attend the Days of the Dead convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, on February 16, 2018. It was revealed on Facebook on February 16, 2018.
