Umberto Giordano Life

Umberto Menotti Maria Giordano (28 August 1867 – 12 November 1948) was an Italian composer who wrote mainly of operas. He was born in Foggia, southern Italy, and studied at the Conservatoire of Naples under Paolo Serrao. Marina Sonzogno, his first opera, was written for a competition run by the music company Casa Sonzogno for the best one-act opera, which was remembered today because it marked the beginning of Italian verismo. * The winner of Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana was named. * Giordano, the youngest contestant, came in sixth out of a total of seventy-three entries with his Marina, a work that ignited enough enthusiasm for Sonzogno to order the staging of an opera based on it in the 1891-92 season. * When this work appeared at the Teatro Argentina, Rome, in February 1892, it caused something of a scandal. * It performed well in Vienna, Prague, and Berlin and was revived as Il Voto a few years later in an attempt to re-invent the opera, Regina Diaz, but it was a disappointment after only two performances. Giordano went to Milan and revived verismo with Andrea Chénier (1896), based on the life of French poet André Chénier. Enrico Caruso, a rising young tenor, appeared in Enrico Caruso's play (1898), based on Victorien Sardou's play. It was also a success, and it is now being carried out today. * His later works are much less well known, but musicologists and commentators are still appreciating La cena delle beffe, which is based on Sem Benelli's same name, although musicologists and critics are still appreciated with some skepticism. Umberto Giordano, the oldest theater in his hometown of Foggia, has been dedicated to him. * A square in Foggia has been named after him and houses several statues depicting his most famous works.
