Personal life

College career
Johnson played in 127 games (87 starts) and averaged 10.6 points, 4.8 assists, and 1.1 steals in 27.9 minutes per game, shooting 45.6 percent from the field, 71.6 percent from the free-throw line in four years at Fresno State University. He finished his career with a score of 1,346 points on Fresno State's all-time scoring list. He was voted to the All-Mountain West Conference second team and shot 43.2 percent from three-point range, the sixth-best single-season three-point field goal percentage in school history.
Professional career
Johnson made the Miami Heat for the 2014 NBA Summer League after being undrafted in the 2014 NBA draft. He signed with the Heat on August 7, 2014, but he was later waived by the team on October 25. He was signed by the Sioux Falls Skyforce of the NBA Development League as an affiliate of the Heat on November 3.
Johnson signed a 10-day deal with the Heat on January 12, 2015. He made his NBA debut against the Golden State Warriors three days later, playing for 1:44 minutes and scoring two points on two free throws.
The Heat decided not to keep Johnson after his deal came to an end, two days later, he rejoined the Skyforce.
Johnson re-joined the Heat on January 29 after signing another 10-day deal with the team. He began his two-year contract with the Heat on February 8. In a 115-98 victory over the Phoenix Suns, he had his best game in season with 26 points and 4 steals. He scored 24 points and played in a career-high 44 minutes off the bench five days later as he helped the Heat beat the Sacramento Kings 114–109. He surpassed the minutes record by playing in all 48 minutes of the Heat's season finale over the Philadelphia 76ers.
Johnson was sidelined for six weeks with a fractured jaw while playing for the Heat in the 2015 NBA Summer League on July 9, 2015. In a loss to the Charlotte Hornets on December 9, 2015, he scored a season-high 20 points. Due to a shoulder injury in December, he missed eight games. During January, Johnson fought through his left shoulder pain before missing the team's final two games of the month after succumbing to the pain. Johnson had hoped to prevent surgery but ultimately gave into the idea on February 1, 2016, a procedure that had him out for three months. On May 1, he returned to action after being ruled out of the bench for the final six minutes of the Heat's Game 7 victory over the Charlotte Hornets in the first round of the playoffs.
Johnson became a restricted free agent after the 2015-2016 season. He was given a four-year, $50 million contract sheet from the Brooklyn Nets on July 6, 2016. The Heat matched the Nets' contract offer four days later, re-signing Johnson. In a 103–95 loss to the Atlanta Hawks on December 7, 2016, he scored a career-high 27 points. In a 136-130 double overtime loss to the Orlando Magic, he surpassed his record on December 20, scoring 32 points—the most any Heat reserve had ever scored in a game. By Voshon Lenard in 1999, the previous Heat scoring record by a reserve was 29 points.

In exchange for Ryan Anderson, Johnson and Wayne Ellington were traded to the Phoenix Suns on February 6, 2019. In a 120–112 loss to the Atlanta Hawks on February 23, he scored a season-high 29 points on February 23. He scored 18 points against his former team, the Miami Heat, two days later to help the Suns snap a franchise-record 17-game losing streak to win 124–121. After missing ten games with right knee pain and arthroscopic surgery, Johnson was ruled out for the remainder of the season. The Suns waived Johnson on February 9, 2020, the Suns' excused him from playing on February 9, 2020.
Johnson signed with the Brooklyn Nets on June 24, 2020. He rejoined the Nets on November 27. In 39 games played with Brooklyn, he averaged 5.4 points, 2 rebounds, and 1.2 assists in an average of 17 minutes per game.
