Tony Underwood Career

Rugby career

At Barnard Castle School, his rugby abilities were first nurtured. He played for Leicester Tigers and England after his elder brother Rory, who played for Rory and England. Gary, Tony's brother who played for England at under-21 years, was another. In October 1992, he made his England debut against Canada and went on to win a total of 27 English caps. In England's 1937 6–3 victory over Scotland, Tony and Rory were the first brothers to play for England together since Harold and Arthur Wheatley's 1964 Six Nations Grand Slam victory, and they were partnered in the 1995 Five Nations Grand Slam triumph.

He appeared in the Rugby World Cup in 1995 and defeated Australia in a quarter final match, with right-wing rival Damien Smith failing to defend him and helping England progress to the Semi-finals. He had another memorable moment in which his rival, Jonah Lomu, ran a ring around him before cruising over full back Mike Catt's tackle for what would be one of his four attempts in the Semi-finals. In 1995, he moved from Leicester to Newcastle Falcons. He made 11 appearances at Newcastle during the 1997-98 Premiership. England's last cap came against South Africa in December 1998, where he was forced to return early; England went on to win. He will appear in a Pizza Hut commercial campaign alongside Lomu later this year.
