Early life
Tony Jaa was born and raised in Surin Province's rural areas, including Rin Sai and Thongdee Yeerum. He is of Kuyr ethnic group that lives in Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos. The Kuy's have more adherence to Cambodia's roots than to those of Lao or Thai cultures. The Kuy are known for their ability as elephant trainers. Tony Jaa speaks Kuy, Thai, and Northern Khmer.
Jaa attended films by Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, and Jet Li at temple fairs, which inspired him to study martial arts. He followed the methods in his father's rice paddy.
In a 2004 interview, Jaa told Time, "what they [Lee, Chan, and Li] did was so beautiful and so brave that I wanted to do it too." "I trained until I could do the job exactly as I had seen the masters do it."
At age 10, Jaa started training in Muay Thai at his local temple. He was a protégé of stuntman and action film producer Panna Rittikrai by the age of 15. Panna had advised Jaa to enroll in Maha Sarakham Province's Maha Sarakham College of Physical Education, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree.
Personal life
On May 3, Jaa married Piyarat Chotiwattanont, his long-time girlfriend. Both parents have two children.
Career
Jaa performed for 14 years as a stuntman for Muay Thai Stunt, appearing in several of Rittikrai's films. When Sammo Hung, the martial-arts film actor produced a commercial for an energy drink that required him to reach an elephant's tusks and somersault onto the elephant's back, he doubled for him. He was also a stunt double in Insee Daeng, Thailand's best-known television show (Red Eagle).
Panna and Jaa, together, became interested in Muay Boran, the predecessor of muay thai, and spent four years at the art with the intention of producing a film about it. They were able to produce a short film demonstrating what Jaa could do with the support of instructor Grandmaster Mark Harris. Prachya Pinkaew, one of the people they showed it to, was producer-director Prachya Pinkaew.
Ong-Bak: Muay Thai Warrior, 2003, Jaa's break-out role as a leading man, led to Ong-Bak: Muay Thai Warrior. Jaa did all the stunts without mechanical assistance or computer-generated effects, and it displayed his unique combination of extreme acrobatics and fast, dance-like moves. A ligament injury and a strained ankle were two of the injuries that were shot in the filming. One scene in the film involved fighting with another actor even though his own trousers were on fire. In a 2005 interview, he said, "I actually got burned." "I had to concentrate because once my pants were on fire, the fires sprang upwards and burned my eyebrows, eyelashes, and my nose." To get it right, we had to do a few more takes."
Tom-Yum-Goong (The Protector in the United States), his second major film, was released, after Tom yum soup, which featured a version of Muay Thai that imitates elephants.
In August 2006, he was in New York to promote The Protector's introduction in the United States, as well as a visit to the Museum of the Moving Image.
Tony Jaa's third film, Sword or Daab Atamas, will be released by Sahamongkol Film International, about Thai two-sword combat (daab song mue), with a script by Prapas Chonsalanont. Sword was suspended due to a deterioration between Prachya and Jaa, which neither have publicly announced.
Ong-Bak 2, Ong-Bak 2, was announced in March 2006. It began pre-production in fall 2006 and was released in December 2008 with Jaa both directing and starring.
Jackie Chan, Jaa's film director, enticed him to perform Jaa in Rush Hour 3. "I gave Tony Jaa's director videos because I think Tony Jaa is the most well-rounded of all action actors," Chan told the Associated Press. Chan wrote, "The producer loved him a lot." However, Jaa said he would be unable to attend due to time conflicts surrounding Ong Bak 2's shooting.
Ong-Bak-2 producer Prachya Pinkaew and action choreographer Panna Rittikrai were filming on Chocolate, which starred a female martial artist and was released on February 6, 2008. Jaa had appeared in a small part of Chatrichalerm Yukol's third installment of the King Naresu film series, but the film was eventually cancelled. Ong Bak 3 was released in 2010 and brings an end to the Thai trilogy's.
Ong Bak 3, the 2010 sequel to the prequel Ong Bak 2, was directed by Tony Jaa and Panna Rittikrai.
Jaa became a Buddhist monk at a Buddhist temple in Surin, Thailand, on May 28th.
Jaa accepted a film contract with Sahamongkol after leaving the monastery. He filmed Tom Yum Goong 2 for them, alongside Chocolate actress Jija Yanin for the first time in Jaa's big screen with another international martial arts actor. Panna Rittikrai, a director, and actress Prachya Pinkaew have both appeared in this film.
In 2013, Jaa worked with Dolph Lundgren in the Thai western-comedy A Man Will Rise (which is unfinished) and in Lundgren's pet project Skin Trade in 2014. Jaa co-starred in the blockbuster action film Furious 7, produced by and starring Vin Diesel and directed by James Wan. In Hong Kong-Chinese action film SPL II, Jaa joined forces with fellow actor Louis Koo and Wu Jing.
Jaa was briefly attached to the Kickboxer: Vengeance's remake. However, in November 2014, it was revealed that he had left the project. In XX: Return of Xander Cage, directed by D.J., Jaa's most recent film was co-starring Vin Diesel once more. In January 2017, Caruso and others were both released.
In Paradox, the third part of the SPL series, Jaa co-starred with Louis Koo in October 2016.
