Anthony Lewis Amonte (born August 2, 1970) is a retired American professional ice hockey player.
He played right wing for the New York Rangers, Chicago Blackhawks, Phoenix Coyotes, Philadelphia Flyers, and the Calgary Flames in the National Hockey League (NHL).
He is currently the head coach of Thayer Academy Varsity Hockey Team.
Playing career
Amonte, who was drafted 68th overall in the 1988 NHL Entry Draft by the New York Rangers, is best known for his time with the Chicago Blackhawks and as a representative of the United States in international play. Amonte made his 1991 playoff debut. He excelled as a rookie, scoring over 30 goals and placing third in the Calder Memorial Trophy voting. He spent three seasons with the Rangers, scoring 84 goals, before being traded to the Chicago Blackhawks in 1993-94, the year the Rangers won the Stanley Cup for the third time. He gained fame in Chicago, where he was reunited with former Thayer Academy teammate Jeremy Roenick, scoring at least 30 goals six times and at least 40 three times, including a streak in which he didn't miss a single game.
In the 1996 World Cup of Hockey tournament, Amonte, who was representing Team USA, received the Gold Medal. In the final against Team Canada, Amonte scored the game-winning goal with just two and a half minutes remaining.
He started his career with the Phoenix Coyotes in 2002 and was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers near the end of the season. Amonte signed with the Calgary Flames as a free agent on August 2, 2005, scoring his 400th NHL goal for the Flames against the Ottawa Senators on December 10, 2005.
With 900 points, he ranks 13th all-time record in points among American-born players. He revealed his resignation on his personal website.
The Chicago Blackhawks celebrated "Tony Amonte Heritage Night" at the United Center on January 21, 2009. They gave the first 10,000 followers a special commemorative Tony Amonte pin.
Coaching career
Tony was named the new head coach of the hockey program at his alma mater, Thayer Academy in Braintree, Massachusetts, on June 11, 2010. Tony Amonte, the Thayer Academy men's varsity hockey team's head coach, would resign on September 27, 2022. He resigned in order to join the Florida Panthers as a scout.
