Life and career
Itano was a member of the Japanese idol girl team AKB48 in 2005 as part of Team A, the first team. She also modeled for the women's fashion magazine Cawaii! and published her first photo book, T.O.M.row, in April 2009. Majisuka Gakuen played Shibuya in AKB48's TV Tokyo drama In early 2010, she appeared in AKB48's television Tokyo drama Majisuka Gakuen. She appeared on Kamen Rider W as Queen, as well as fellow AKB48 performer Tomomi Kasai, until the show came to a close in late 2010. They made up Queen & Elizabeth, the sub-unit. She came in fourth overall in AKB48's 2010 general election.
On January 26, 2011, Itano's first single, "Dear J," was released. It ranked first on the Oricon daily charts and number two on the Oricon weekly ranking, selling 204,981 copies. She reprised her role as Shibuya in Majisuka Gakuen 2 in April. On Recochoku's daily charts and number 6 on the weekly charts, her first digital single "Wanna Be Now" reached number 2 on Recochoku's daily charts and ranked sixth. In AKB48's 2011 general election, she finished eighth overall. "Fui ni" was her second single and sold 90,103 copies on July 13 and reached No. 1 on the Oricon weekly chart, reaching number one.
Itano was described as the "Queen of TV commercials" in 2012 for having more jobs with companies than any other female tarento (although her count of 20 was actually a tie with those of fellow AKB48 member Mariko Shinoda).
Itano announced on February 1, 2013 at an AKB48 stage greeting, that she was leaving the organization. On June 12, she released "1%," her fourth solo single. Samantha Vega's title track was included in television commercials. The music video was shot in New York and features an appearance by American actress and model Taylor Momsen. On August 25, itano attended her farewell "graduation" service at the Tokyo Dome and a follow-up performance at the AKB48 Theater on August 27; Nico Nico Namahousou streamed live from the event.
