Thomas Everett Scott (born September 7, 1970) is an American actor.

His film work includes a starring role as drummer Guy Patterson in the film That Thing You Do!, the protagonist in An American Werewolf in Paris, and notable roles in Boiler Room, One True Thing, Dead Man on Campus, The Love Letter, Because I Said So, Danger One, and La La Land.

In television, he is well known for his role as detective Russell Clarke in the television series Southland, Charles Garnett in Z Nation, and for his recurring roles as Eric Wyczenski in ER, Sam Landon in Beauty & the Beast, Kevin Duval in Scream, William in Reign, and Mr. Down in 13 Reasons Why.

He stars in the truTV sitcom I'm Sorry.

Early life

Scott was born in East Bridgewater, Massachusetts, the son of Cynthia "Cindy" (née Pierce), an insurance sales representative, and William Joseph "Bill" Scott (died 2007), a civil engineer. He graduated from Syracuse University in 1992, where he started out as a communications major, but eventually majored in drama.

Career

Scott's first appearance on Law & Order and a Crest toothpaste commercial in 1993 was as Matthew for several seasons on the television situation comedy Grace Under Fire. He portrayed the title character's unethical son, whom she had requested for adoption. Scott was cast in Guy Patterson's film That Thing You Do in 1996. He was almost skipped over due to his resemblance to actor Tom Hanks' film director, but Hanks' wife, Rita Wilson, encouraged Hanks to cast Scott in the role.

Scott has appeared in several films; he was the lead in the films An American Werewolf in Paris and Dead Man on Campus, and he co-starred with Kate Capshaw and Tom Selleck in The Love Letter. He appeared in the cult film Boiler Room and made an uncredited cameo in Van Wilder. He appeared on the television series ER in 2002 and 2003, as well as other films and television shows such as Will & Grace and Sons of Anarchy. He co-starred in the series Philly as a lawyer, co-starring Kim Delaney. The show was a critical hit, but it was cancelled after one season due to low ratings. On TNT, he appeared in Saved, a medical drama series. Surrender Dorothy, Joe, appeared in the TV show Surrender Dorothy. He appeared in the comedy Because I Said So as a closeted film actor Mitchell Green, written by Douglas Carter Beane, and appeared in a Broadway theatre comedy called "The Little Dog Laughed." On ABC's short comedy drama series Cashmere Mafia (2008), he appeared as Jack Cutting. Don Shalvoy, the fictional Governor of New York, appeared in four episodes of Law & Order in 2009. In the seven episodes of Southland's first season, he appeared as Detective Russell Clarke, who was later picked up by TNT. He became a recurring character in three of six episodes at the start of the second season. In the third and fifth seasons, he continued to appear in selected episodes.

In Danger One, Scott had supporting roles in other films including Race to Witch Mountain, Tanner Hall, Mars Needs Moms, Parental Guidance, Enemies Closer, Sister Cities, and more. Sam Landon in Beauty and the Beast, Kevin Duval in Scream, Charles Garnett in Z Country, and William in Reign were all on television. In 2016, he appeared in the film La La Land. He co-starred in the film Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul in 2017 and appeared alongside Andrea Savage for two seasons.

We may be leaving out the summer, but in Dollywood, the festive season is officially here. In preparation, NBC recently announced the newest guest stars in Dolly Parton's forthcoming Christmas film, "Dolly Parton's Mountain Magic Christmas," including Miley Cyrus, the country's most popular goddaughter. Billy Ray Cyrus, Jimmy Fallon, Willie Nelson, Jimmie Allen, and Zach Williams appeared as additional guests, with Tom Everett Scott, Ana Gasteyer, and Zach Williams appearing alongside Parton. Parton's intention to spread the "Mountain Magic" of Dollywood at Christmastime, and the story is said to be full of heartwarming Christmas themes. According to a NBC press release, the film comes to Parton when "Three Wise Mountain Men" arrives, leading her on a journey through her history and helping her become reinspired by Christmas's magic.
