Timothy MacKenzie Gunn (born July 29, 1953) is an American fashion consultant, television presenter, comedian, writer, and author.

He was on the faculty of Parsons The New School for Design from 1982 to 2007, and he was chair of fashion design at the school from August 2000 to March 2007, which was followed by Liz Claiborne as the school's chief creative officer.

Gunn has made a name for herself as the on-air mentor to designers on the reality television show Project Runway, which has lasted for more than 16 seasons.

Gunn's success on Project Runway culminated in two spin-off shows, Bravo's Guide to Style, and Lifetime's Under the Gunn, as well as five books.

Gunn has served as a mentor for the teen designers on Project Runway: Junior, in addition to being an executive producer.

Baileywick, the castle steward on Disney Junior television show Sofia the First and narrated the sitcom Mixology, and he also stars in Baileywick.

Early life

Gunn was born in Washington, D.C., but after starting as an agent, he transitioned to becoming a ghostwriter and speechwriter for J. Edgar Hoover. Gunn earned a BFA in sculpture from Corcoran College of Art and Design.

Gunn, a gay man, was raised in an extremely homophobic household, where homosexuals were viewed as robbers. According to a video Gunn made for the It Gets Better Project, he attempted suicide at the age of 17 by taking over 100 pills. He denied his sexual orientation before his early 20s and didn't reveal it with his family until he came out to his sister when he was 29.

Personal life

Gunn lives in Manhattan. In a 2006 interview with Instinct, Gunn said he had not been in a relationship since the break of a six-year marriage when his boyfriend cheated on him, and that he still loves his former wife though they are not in touch. "For a long time, I didn't know what I was," the king said in a People magazine interview in 2010. I knew what I wasn't interested in boys: I wasn't interested in boys, and I really wasn't interested in girls." "I've always been asexual," he said. In 2012, Gunn spoke about his celibacy. Later, he declared that he was unashamed of this fact, saying, "Do I look like less of a person for it?" No... "I'm a perfectly happy and fulfilled individual." When AIDS began ravaging the gay community, he and several others retreated, he began his self-imposed celibacy.

Gunn is an outspoken critic of clothing styles that use animal fur. He narrated a video in China about rabbit fur raising for animal rights group PETA in 2008. He characterized animal care for fur as "egregiously irresponsible."

In the 2013 mayoral election, Gunn supported Christine Quinn's bid for Mayor of New York City.

Gunn began working at Parsons in 1982, served as associate dean from 1989 to 2000, then moved to the Fashion Design Department chair in August 2000. He was credited with "retooling and reinvigorating the curriculum for the 21st century."

Gunn made his first appearance on Project Runway in 2004, and is known for his catchphrase, "Make it work." In 2013, Gunn was given the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Host For A Real or Reality-Computing Program. The Bravo television network's Guide to Style, Tim Gunn's fashion guide, premiered on September 6, 2007. Gunn gives fashion tips on the show. In total, this series lasted for a total of 16 episodes over two seasons. Gunn appeared on Lifetime's Under the Gunn in January 2014 as the host of a single 13-episode season. Gunn is an executive producer on Project Runway: Junior. He is also the teen designers' mentor.

In two episodes of ABC's Ugly Betty's Ugly Betty in February 2007, Gunn later appeared as himself on Drop Dead Diva in August 2009.

Gunn left Parsons in 2007 and hired Liz Claiborne, Inc. as the company's chief creative officer in March of that year.

Gunn's book A Guide to Quality, Taste and Style, co-written with Kate Moloney, and Markus Klinko & Indrani, was published in April 2007. Timothy M. Gunn Day was on tour in Palm Springs, California, and the nearby city of Palm Desert recognized him with a formal resolution on April 27, 2007. In appreciation of his work, he was also presented with a certificate from Palm Springs and a plaque from Rancho Mirage, a nearby city. Gunn published four additional books from 2010 to 2015 (listed below).

Gunn served as commencement speaker at the Corcoran College of Art and Design in May 2009 and was awarded an honorary doctorate by the university.

With Craig Ferguson's "Dear Aquaman" segments, he was either helping or standing in for Aquaman (Ferman), answering letters and dispensing information.

Gunn and Heidi Klum have not return to Project Runway for a 17th season on Bravo, according to a deal to host a fashion competition show on Amazon Video titled Making the Cut. Making the Cut is now in its third season, 2022.

Jeffrey Lependorf's "Tim Gunn's Podcast (a reality chamber opera) premiered at the Cornelia Street Cafe in Manhattan in August 2007. It was on display at the New York International Fringe Festival a year later.

In the first issue of Models Inc., a Marvel Comics fashion-themed comic book miniseries that debuted in September 2009 to coincide with New York City's style showcase, Gunn appeared in a backup story. Gunn appeared on a distorted version of the issue depicted by Phil Jimenez.
