Therese Rein Life

Thérèse Rein (born 17 July 1958) is an Australian entrepreneur who is the founder of Ingeus, an international employment and business psychology firm. Rein was the wife of Kevin Rudd, Australia's Prime Minister, from 2007 to 2010, and then again in 2013.

She was the first Australian Prime Minister's wife to continue in the paid workforce while her husband was in office.

In December 2010, the Australian Human Rights Commission awarded the Human Rights Medal for her long-serving service to human rights, particularly the rights of people with disabilities.

In December 2012, she was awarded an Honorary Doctor of the University degree by Griffith University for her contributions to industry, as well as the award of Doctor of Letters (honoris causa) by the University of Western Sydney in honor of her service to the Australian community, contribution to human rights, working effectively with human rights systems, eliminating poverty and injustice, and the recognition of disadvantage.

She was inducted into the Queensland Business Leaders Hall of Fame in 2018.

Early life

Rein was born in Adelaide, South Australia, on July 17th 1958. John Reiner, her father, was a Royal Australian Air Force navigator who sustained serious spinal cord injuries when crashing a plane. He later became an aeronautical engineer and represented Australia as a paralympian, with his contributions as a catalyst in the induction of his daughter. Elizabeth was his future wife at a hospital in Sydney where she was working as the head of physiotherapy.

Rein attended St Peter's Collegiate Girls' School in Adelaide and Firbank Grammar School in Melbourne. She earned a Bachelor of Arts with distinction in 1980 and a Master of Psychology (Qualifying) degree in 1981. Kevin Rudd was visiting Burgmann College in the first year of university and were students of the Student Christian Movement. The pair married in 1981 right after graduation, before heading to Sweden and China for envoy-in-training Rudd. They returned to Australia, where Rein founded Ingeus, to help people injured at work find jobs. They have three children: Jessica (born 1983), Nicholas (born 1986), and Marcus (born 1993).

Therese Rein Career

Business career

She worked part-time as a rehabilitation consultant, mainly assisting people in returning to work. Thérèse Rein and Associates, then Ingeus, was founded in 1988. Jobseekers, in particular long-term unemployed people, are welcomed into the workforce by this international employment service company.

David Gonski AC, a well-known businessman based in Sydney, is Ingeus' chairman. Rein, Garry Hounsell, and Greg Ashmead are among the other producers.

In May 2007, the sale of Ingeus' Australian arm ensured that there was no apparent conflict of interest as her husband, Kevin Rudd, was the Opposition leader (and later Prime Minister of Australia). In October and December 2007, the Australian businesses were sold.

Ingeus re-entered the Australian market with the acquisition of Assure Programs in October 2011.
