Telly Leung Life

Telly Leung (born January 3, 1980) is an American actor, singer, and songwriter.

He is best known for his appearances on Broadway and as Wes, a member of the Dalton Academy Warblers of the Fox comedy-drama series Glee.

He appeared in the Godspell revival at the Circle in the Square Theatre in 2011. The Los Angeles Times named Leung one of 12 Faces to Watch in 2012: Dance, Theater, Architecture, and Art.

Early life and education

Leung was born and raised in New York City. In Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, he grew up in a traditional Chinese family. He gained admission to prestigious Stuyvesant High School in New York, where he graduated in 1998 with fellow actor Malcolm Barrett. Leung had seriously considered theater, appearing in high school productions of Pippin, Guys & Dolls, and West Side Story in Stuyvesant. He started his career as a featured performer in THE WB-TEAM 11, doing live and television promotional work for the WB Channel 11. Leung was accepted into Carnegie Mellon University's School of Drama after high school.

Acting career

Leung earned his Equity Card during college's summers at the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera and The MUNY in St. Louis. Thommie Walsh, Larry Fuller, and Lee Roy Reams were among the Tony Award winning directors and choreographers. Billy Porter, a Broadway actor who returned to his alma mater to direct Stephen Sondheim's Company's main stage production, was also at CMU. Porter called coworkers involved in the revival of Flower Drum Song on Broadway and offered Leung an audition after casting Leung as Bobby in Company.

DAMAGE. Leung performed his Broadway debut in the revival of Flower Drum Song, starring Lea Salonga, as a participant of the cast and an understudy for Wang Ta. In 2005, he appeared on Broadway with Sondheim in Roundabout Theatre's revival of Pacific Overtures. Leung performed Boq in the Stephen Schwartz musical Wicked company after Pacific Overtures. He returned to New York in 2006 to attend the Paper Mill Playhouse's creation of Godspell. In the final run of Rent, he returned to Broadway and performed as an ensemble member.

In 2007, he appeared on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Leung was a member of Rent's final company and made his film debut in Rent: Live on Broadway. He appeared on Glee, a comedy-drama series, from 2010 to 2011, portraying Wes, a Dalton Academy Warbler.

At the Circle in the Square Theatre, Leung appeared in the revival of Godspell. He reprised his role as the "All Good Gifts" soloist in the Paper Mill production. In the world premiere of the musical Allegiance at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego, he appeared as a featured performer. Lea Salonga and George Takei were both cast members of the original production in September 2012. Leung appeared in the play The World of Extreme Happiness at Goodman Theatre in Chicago in 2014. In February 2015, he began to appear in the Manhattan Theatre Club's co-production.

Leung, the co-stars of George Takei and Lea Salonga, appeared in the musical Allegiance at the Longacre Theatre in October 2015. He then went on to appear in In Transit, the acapella musical. Leung, the titular character of Aladdin's Broadway debut, debuted on June 13, 2017.

Telly directed Theatre Raleigh's production of Yellow Face in 2022.

Music career

On Mopptopp Records, Leung launched Getaway, an original EP in 2005. I'll Cover You, his first solo album, was released on December 4, 2012 via Yellow Sound. Leung is a featured performer on Godspell's cast album, Flower Drum Song, Pacific Overtures, Dear Edwina, and Wall to Wall Sondheim.
