Chris McCarrell (born January 9, 1991) is an American theater and television actor.

He is best known for his portrayal of Marius Pontmercy in Les Misérables' Broadway revival, as well as in its Off-Broadway premiere, 2019 tour, and a 2019 Broadway production.

Early life and education

McCarrell grew up in Aurora, Ohio. DeAnna McCarrell, a guidance counselor in Aurora City Schools, and his father, Bernie McCarrell, a wood shop instructor in Ravenna, Ohio, worked as a mentor.

McCarrell attended University School, an all boys private high school in Hunting Valley, Ohio. McCarrell attended a reception for the former headmaster, where alumni of the performing arts appeared and performed shortly before his freshman year. He told his parents he wanted to be a musical theatre major, and he cites it as the night he knew he wanted to perform.

McCarrell was a musical theatre major at Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music in high school. When he was at Baldwin Wallace, he appeared in many university shows, including Wild Party (Phil), Pippin (Mark), Rent (Mark), Titanic (J. Bruce Ismay), and Next to Normal (Gabe Goodman). In 2013, he graduated from high school.

Career

McCarrell began acting professionally in regional theatres of shows, including lead roles in Summer of '42 and the original production of Bubble Boy.

McCarrell appeared in a 35MM concert later this year. Among other Broadway stars, Lauren Pritchard (Spring Awakening), Lesli Margherita (Matilda), and Zachary Levi (First Date), among others, attended the performance on October 7, 2013.

McCarrell performed in Les Misérables' 2014 revival, initially reading for Marius Pontmercy's role. However, just a few months after his initial reading, he was called back to audition for Joly, one of the other students. McCarrell was then hired to appear in Joly, as well as understudy the role of Marius. In the NBC television special, Lost Boy Nibs, McCarrell was portrayed as Lost Boy Nibs for the first year. On December 4, 2014, the show was broadcast on television.

After a brief rehearsal period, McCarrell officially replaced cast member Andy Mientus in Les Misérables on March 3, 2015, and appeared as Marius at the Imperial Theatre until the show's closing on September 4, 2016.

McCarrell performed a sold-out solo concert at 54 Below on June 1, 2015, and he appeared in "Christmas Carols with Chris McCarrell" later this year.

McCarrell performed as the titular character in The Lightning Thief: The Perpetual Jackson Musical, which ran at the Lucille Lortel Theatre from March 23, 2017 to May 6, 2017. Percy Percy in a sold-out The Lightning Thief musical performance at The Green Room 42 on August 28, 2017. He appeared Percy in The Lightning Thief's Broadway run from late 2019 to early 2020.
