Barnett appeared in the original London stage production of Alan Bennett's 2004 play The History Boys, as well as in the New York, Sydney, Wellington, and Hong Kong productions and film versions of the play. He had been involved with The History Boys from the very beginning.

In the film Bright Star, John Everett Millais appeared in the BBC series Desperate Romantics and Joseph Severn. Thomas Middleton, a retired actor, appeared at the National Theatre in Women Beware Women, which ran from 20 April to July 2010. In Shakespeare's Richard III, he appeared in an all-male cast, as Queen Elizabeth in Shakespeare's Richard III, as well as Sebastian in Twelfth Night, alongside Mark Rylance in the title role. The show then migrated to the Apollo Theatre in the West End, opening on November 2nd, 2012 and running for a limited audience. Both Twelfth Night and Richard III performed at the Belasco Theatre until February 2014. In Twelfth Night's revival, Barnett reimagined his role as Elizabeth Woodville in Richard III and assumed the role of Viola (previously performed by Johnny Flynn in London). Barnett reunited with History Boys playwright Alan Bennett and co-star Sacha Dhawan for Bennett's latest play, Allelujah! at the Bridge Theatre in July 2018.
