Early life
Tanveer "Tan" Wasim Safdar was born and raised in South Yorkshire, England, to Muslim Pakistani parents. In his book, France describes how he became alienated as a result of growing up in a tight Muslim household where homosexuality was perceived negatively, the lack of representation in media (and of LGBTQ South Asian people in particular), and his personal experiences of physical and verbal violence in his youth and adult life. "Our home wasn't particularly religious, but we had a strong link to our Muslim roots," France said.
In a young age, France's fashion aspirations began, inspired by the Disney clothing made in his grandparents' denim factory in Bury, England, where he spent time working. He had learned how to make and embellish a denim jacket by the age of thirteen. In 2019, he reportedly discovered that his grandfather was forced to shut the plant due to the fact that the items were Disney knockoffs. Tan France is a huge fan of Bollywood music and films.

Personal life
France and his partner, Rob France, who is a pediatric nurse and illustrator, live in Salt Lake City, Utah. After marriage, France married his husband twice, first in London and then in New York City. He and Rob announced on Instagram on April 13, 2021, the first child he and Rob were expecting. Their son was born seven weeks early on July 2021 and had to spend three weeks in the NICU.
Since learning how to cook and sew at the age of nine, France has a deep love for cooking and baking.
After "working toward" it for ten years, France was born as a US citizen on June 9, 2020. He retained his British citizenship, making him a dual citizen of both countries.

Career
After graduating from college, France began to work as both designer and producer for Zara, Selfridges, and Bershka, among other stores, in order to broaden his understanding of retailing; he later went on to work at a variety of companies in order to learn more about manufacturing. He began in menswear and then moved to women'swear, which he later majored in for his fashion degree. France said that if a high-profile client came into the stores where he was employed, he would often work as a stylist.
France immigrated to the United States in 2005 after beginning life in New York City and then emig to the United States in 2015. Before opening his solo fashion business in 2011, France was head of Shade Clothing. Kingdom & State was a registered charity. The brand sold clothing made to comply with Mormon clothing code, a group that represented a large population in Utah, where France was located. He later founded two smaller clothing shops. ModCloth and Forever 21 were among France's designs that were purchased. For many years, the designs were seen on the website and in stores under the brand name. He then served as co-founder, fashion designer, and CEO for the Rachel Parcell Inc clothing collection, which was available at Nordstrom in 2016.
Since selling his companies, France officially resigned, with the intention of starting a family with his husband, but Netflix contacted him later. This began his journey as a media celebrity by his participation as the fashion expert on Queer Eye, which premiered in February 2018. France appeared in Taylor Swift's "You Need to Calm Down" music video in 2019. He appeared in 2020 in a special charity version of The Great British Bake Off in order to raise funds for Stand Up To Cancer, and he was also the king of the episode. In interviews with ITV's This Morning and with NPR, France revealed that he had sold all three of his companies after starting to work for Netflix.
By partnering with EyeBuyDirect, France developed an eyewear collection in 2019. Since 2019, he has been a GQ Middle East official columnist. He is Express's monthly stylist starting in 2020.
In July 2020, France was nominated for an Emmy alongside his Queer Eye co-stars for best hosting as reality or competition. France was confirmed as a style coach on MasterClass, a worldwide education video website. In September 2020, the Tan France x Etsy limited edition series was unveiled.
