Svala Career

Career

Svala is the daughter of well-known Icelandic singer Björgvin Halldórsson. She began singing at a young age, becoming her father's backing vocalist on one of his albums when she was seven years old. When the singer sang a Christmas duet with her father "Fyr Jól," she had her first number one hit in Iceland when she was nine years old. With another Christmas hit titled "Ég hlakka svo til," she was out when she was 11 years old. She will also be known for more Christmas songs that have been big hits in Iceland.

Svala studied ballet for seven years with the Icelandic National Theatre Ballet Ballet. When she was studying ballet, she was also writing music with her high school band.

Svala formed the band Scope with two Icelandic DJs and a producer when she was 16 years old. Their music was heavily influenced by UK house and disco. Svala and Scope also did a cover of "Was That Was" in the mid 90s, which became a dance anthem and a number one hit in Iceland. Svala was quickly signed to one of Iceland's top record labels; Skifan Records, and after releasing a few songs with Scope, Svala was left to join the Icelandic indie dance funk band Bubbleflies. She performed a few songs with Bubbleflies and toured all over Iceland, including "I Betcha," which charted on Icelandic radio.

Svala began writing and recording with Scottish producer Ian Morrow when she was 18 years old. She was studying in Iceland but she was heading back and forth to London and Glasgow to write and record music for her debut solo album. Svala signed a six-album contract with EMI and Priority Records in North America in 1999. The record contract was one of the biggest deals with an Icelandic recording artist ever made. Since signing, she moved to Los Angeles in 2000 and began writing for some of the top hit-makers in the music industry at the time. The Real Me, her debut album, was released in 2001 with the title single "The Real Me" charting on the Billboard top 40 singles chart. Priority Records and Svala and all the other artists on the label's roster were able to remain alive after 9/11. Priority Records' album The Real Me was a platinum selling album in Iceland and was also well received in Germany, Spain, and Japan after Svala's departure from Priority Records.

The singer returned to Iceland and started writing and recording for her forthcoming solo album, The Bird Of Freedom, which was released in 2005. It was created by Svala herself and her father. Svala co-wrote with songwriters from the United Kingdom, Scotland, and Germany. Svala was awarded a gold medal in Iceland, giving her the opportunity to demonstrate her writing and producing skills.

Svala formed the electronic band Steed Lord on February 8, 2006, together with her husband-to-be Einar "Mega" Egilsson and his younger brother Edvard "Eddie" Egilsson, the second band of the Steed Lord. Steed Lord was touring around Europe and North America, being featured on high-profile blogs, magazines, college radio, and mixtapes in the United States following a few shows in Iceland and with lots of buzz on MySpace. Steed Lord was a member of the nu-rave movement, known for their soulful-beat dance music and chic style. They're back for tour, and they're remixed by Crookers, DJ Mehdi, and Jack Beats. Steed Lord WeSC activists in 2006 became WeSC activists, collaborating with the Swedish clothing brand for all of their campaigns. H&M approached them in 2007 to produce a clothing collection that was sold in 52 stores in over 100 countries around the world.

The band was on their way to Iceland to go touring in Scandinavia on September 9, 2008, when they collided with an almost fatal car on Iceland's icy road. In a head-on collision, Svala's father, who was in possession of the law, lost control and struck them straight on. Svala sustained broken bones and serious internal injuries. Steed Lord returned from the hospital after suffering from the crash in Chromeo on their US tour.

In the summer of 2009, Svala moved to Los Angeles. Their music has been featured on television shows such as So You Think You Can Dance and Keeping Up With The Kardashians. Steed Lord was recruited by brands and companies such as The Standard Hotel and Universal Music Australia to produce and style music videos and brand based media.

Svala took a break from music and moved with her husband to Iceland. Svala was one of the four judges on the team "The Voice" in Iceland in 2015. Sixty artists had been chosen to appear in the Icelandic version of the festival, which aired in the fall of 2015. The Voice is one of the world's most coveted talent competitions, with over 500 million viewers, and the first edition of the Iceland version of the franchise was reported to have been watched by 30% of the population. Svala formed the duo BLISSFUL with her husband in early 2016, and the pair's first single "Elevate" debuted on Spotify in early 2016. The band's second single, "Make It Better," was released on August 24, 2017.

She received the Icelandic national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest with her album "Paper," which she co-authored with Einar Egilsson, Lester Mendez, and Lily Elise on March 11, 2017. She appeared in the first semi-final of the competition, which took place on May 9th. She did not qualify for the final because she was unable to qualify for the final.

She appeared on Reykjavkurd's "Ekkert Drama" in July 2018. Svala soon released "For the Night" and "Karma" under Sony Denmark after she agreed to a distribution agreement with them in 2018. Svala was on the track "Sex" with Baggalutur in December 2018. Svala had returned to Söngvakeppnin as a songwriter with the album "What Are You Waiting For" on January 26th.
