Early life
Sunny Anderson was born in Lawton, Oklahoma, and she grew up as an Army brat, allowing her to travel the world (living in Germany and other countries) and try many local cuisines with her parents, who were food enthusiasts. She attended Madison High School in San Antonio, Texas, and after graduating, she joined the United States Air Force in June 1993, where she was promoted to Senior Airman and served as a military radio host in Seoul, South Korea. She worked in San Antonio from 1993 to 1997 for Air Force News Agency radio and television. In June 1997, Anderson was honorably discharged from the Air Force. She went to Loyola University in New Orleans. Anderson was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis at the age of 19. In 2014, she teamed up with the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America to raise the risk of this disease.
Career
Anderson served as a radio personality on KCJZ and KONO-FM in San Antonio, WYLD-FM and KUMX in Fort Polk, Louisiana, and WDTJ in Detroit, Michigan, from 1995 to 2001.
Anderson arrived in New York City at the age of 26, and spent as a radio presenter on HOT 97 (WQHT) in New York City from 2001 to 2003. She was the operator of Sunny's Delicious Dishes, a catering business based in Jersey City, New Jersey, from 2003 to 2005.
She first appeared on the Food Network in October 2005 (as a participant on the Emeril Live program) and began hosting How'd That Gets To My Plate? In July 2008, a new one was released. She also co-hosted Cooking for Real (beginning in April 2008) and appeared as co-host with Food Network program Gotta Get It beginning in April 2007.
She was Food and Lifestyle Editor for Hip Hop Weekly in 2006 and 2007.
