Sudhakar Rao Career

Early career

Sudhakar Rao grew up in Basavanagudi and attended the National School. He stayed close to the ground near his school and would play tennis with tennis ball often. Sudhakar bats were seen during one of the sessions by the school's sports secretary. Sudhakar was immediately accepted in the school team and ordered to play against a rival academy. It was the first time Sudhakar was playing on a matting wicket and handling a cricket ball. He made the occasion special by scoring a hundred.

Sudhakar Rao based his batting on Gundappa Viswanath's. He was a huge fan of Gundappa Viswanath from his school days, and a lot of Viswanath's demeanors were rubbing off on him. Sudhakar played for VV Puram Cricket Club before Viswanath followed him and joined the Spartans cricket team. Sudhakar did well for state schools and made his way into the South Zone schools.

Sudhakar Rao joined APS Bangalore in his final year of college and played his Ranji Trophy debut against Kerala in 1972.

Ranji career

Sudhakar Rao lived through the 1976-76 season. In 5 innings, he took 449 runs. He had started the year off with a hundred against the Rest of India team, which featured Bishan Singh Bedi at Ahmedabad. A double century against Hyderabad was the highlight of the season. He had learned that his mother had been admitted to the hospital for a mild stroke but he continued to play. He was eventually selected to the Indian cricket team for the tour of New Zealand thanks to his work.

International career

Sudhakar Rao was selected for the Indian team on the tour of New Zealand in 1976. He started out with 32 and 25 against the Northern Districts at Hamilton. At Dunedin, he continued his streak with 34 and 6 defeats against Otago. At Eden Park, he made his one-day international debut against New Zealand. He was out for 4 as India failed to capture 236 in 35 overs and never played for India again.

Sudhakar Rao was chosen for the following tours of the West Indies. He had a rough start in the side games and didn't have enough runs to score.

Later career

Sudhakar Rao continued to be a pillar of strength for Karnataka's state squad, winning the Ranji Trophy in 1973-74, 1977–78, 1982-83. In the national championship, he had scored 3021 runs at an average of 40.82.
