Subrata Roy (born 10 June 1948) is an Indian businessman.

He is the chairman and managing director of Sahara India Pariwar, an Indian conglomerate with diversified markets and assets, including Aamby Valley City, India's biggest land bank, which is spread in cities across India.

Roy founded the company in 1978. India Today named him one of India's Top 10 Most Influential People in 2012.

After Indian Railways, Sahara group was dubbed the second largest employer in India" by Time magazine in 2004.

The corporation, which is headquartered in More than 5,000 establishments spread across India, employs around 1.4 million under the Sahara India banner.

Subrata Roy was born in Araria on June 10th, 1948, to Sudhir Chandra Roy and Chhabi Roy. He studied at Holy Child Institute in Kolkata and then studied mechanical engineering from the Government Technical Institute in Gorakhpur. Roy established his first company in Gorakhpur.

Business career

Roy joined Sahara Finance, a struggling company, in 1976 that acquired a chit fund and took it over. In 1978, he modified its financial model. Sahara is said to have used Peerless Group's financial model. They are classified as residuary non-banking firms (RNBCs) and they accept deposits of very small amounts.

Roy moved to Lucknow, which became the headquarters of his organization in the 1990s. In the 1990s, his Sahara City project, which included 217 self-sufficient townships, was launched. It evolved from there to become India's biggest conglomerate with a diverse mix of industry needs. The company is now interested in financial services, education, real estate, television, film, entertainment, tourism, and hospitality.

In 1992, the Hindi daily Rashtriya Sahara was launched. The ambitious Aamby Valley City project near Pune in the late 1990s was launched in the late 1990s. Sahara TV was introduced in 2000, but it was later renamed Sahara One. Sahara Time (English), Sahara Samay (Hindi), and Sahara Aalmi (Urdu) began in 2003.

Sahara bought the historic Grosvenor House Hotel in London in 2010 and the Dream Downtown Hotel in New York City in 2012.

Sahara has a total workforce of around 1.2 million, including Salaried Consultants, Field Workers, Agents & Business Associates, etc. After the Government-owned Indian Railways, the Sahara group was dubbed "the second-largest employer in India" by Time magazine in 2004.

Sahara is estimated to have 9 crore investors and depositors, or about 13% of all households in India.

Roy is planning to venture into online education (edunguru) in India, which is mainly aimed at small towns and villages. He has assembled a team made up of members from top universities and colleges around India, as well as abroad. The route map for the program has been prepared, and 14,000 hours of lectures have been scheduled for this.

Roy announced his foray into the car industry in June 2019 under the brand name 'Sahara Evols.' The Sahara Evolve project, as well as advanced allied services, would feature a variety of electric vehicles (EVs).
