According to Forbes magazine, he is Asia's richest man and the 13th richest person in the world as of March 2019.
Early life
Mukesh Dhirubhai Ambani was born in Aden, England's (present-day Yemen), to a Gujarati Hindu family in the city of Dhirubhai Ambani. Anil Ambani, his younger brother, and two sisters, Nina Bhadrashyam Kothari and Dipti Dattaraj Salgaonkar, are among his siblings.
Ambani lived in Yemen for a brief period of time because his father decided to return to India in 1958 to start a spice and textiles business. The former was originally named "Vimal," but "Only Vimal" was later shortened. Until the 1970s, his family lived in a tiny two-bedroom apartment in Bhuleshwar, Mumbai. When the family moved to India, their financial situation was marginally better, but Ambani maintained in a mixed community, used public transportation, and never received an allowance. Dhirubhai bought a 14-story apartment block in Colaba, where Ambani and his brother used to live with their families on separate floors until recently.
Education
Ambani, his brother, and Anand Jain, who later became his close friend, all attended the Hill Grange High School in Peddar Road, Mumbai. He studied at St. Xavier's College, Mumbai, after his secondary schooling. He obtained a BE in chemical engineering from the Institute of Chemical Technology in New York.
Ambani later earned an MBA at Stanford University, but he resigned in 1980 to help his father with Reliance, which at the time was still a small but fast-growing company. His father found that real-life skills were honed from experiences rather than sitting in a classroom, so he called his son back to India from Stanford to oversee a yarn manufacturing project in his business.
Ambani said he was inspired by his mentors William F. Sharpe and Man Mohan Sharma because they are "the kind of professors who made you think outside of the box."
Personal life
He married Nita Ambani in 1985, and the couple have two sons, Akash and Anant, as well as a granddaughter, Isha, who is Akash's twin. They met after his father attended a dance performance that Nita attended and was intrigued with the possibility of arranging a marriage between the two families.
They live in Antilia, a private 27-story building in Mumbai, that was valued at US$1 billion and was the world's most expensive private residence at the time it was constructed. Three helipads, a 160-car garage, private movie theater, swimming pool, and fitness center are among the building's maintenance staff.
On her 44th birthday, Ambani gave his wife a $60 million Airbus A319. The Airbus, which has a capacity of 180 passengers, has been customized to include a living room, bedroom, satellite television, WiFi, sky bar, Jacuzzi, and an office.
Since buying the IPL cricket team Mumbai Indians for $111.9 million in 2008, Ambani was dubbed "the World's Richest Sports Team Owner."
Mukesh Ambani is a strict vegetarian and teetotaler.
He reportedly decided not to forego nearly 240 million from his annual salary as chief of Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) during the fiscal year ending 31 March 2012. Even as RIL's total compensation packages to its top management employees increased during this fiscal year, he decided to do this. Mukesh Ambani holds a 54% interest in the company. For the fourth year in a row, his salary remained unchanged at 150 million.
Anil Ambani, his younger brother, was in criminal contempt for failure to pay Reliance Communications' outstanding debt, which was owed to Swedish gearmaker Ericsson in early 2019. The court ordered Anil a month to come up with the money instead of jail time. Mukesh bailed out his younger brother, who was owed the money at the end of the month. When a green Mahindra Scorpio SUV packed with explosives was discovered near a Mumbai skyscraper housing Ambani in 2021, he was the subject of a bomb scare.
Career
He started helping his father, Dhirubhai Ambani, with their family's business, Reliance Industries Limited, in 1981. By this time, it had already expanded to include refining and petrochemicals. Products and services in the retail and telecommunications industries were also included in the company. Reliance Retail Ltd., another division, is also India's biggest retailer. Since its public launch on September 5, 2016, Reliance's Jio has ranked in the top-five in the country's telecommunication services market.
Ambani was ranked 36 on Forbes magazine's list as of 2016, and has consistently ranked India's richest individual on Forbes magazine's list for the past ten years.
