Steve Paikin Life

Steven Hillel Paikin (born June 9, 1960) is a Canadian journalist, author, and documentary film director.

Paikin has worked for TVOntario (TVO), Ontario's public radio, and is the host of TVO's flagship current affairs program The Agenda with Steve Paikin.

Early life and education

Lawrence Sidney (Larry) Paikin, a designer and founder of Ennis-Paikin Steel Ltd., and Marina Suzanne (Marnie) Sibulash were born in Hamilton, Ontario. In 1999, Marnie Paikin was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada for her role in education and health care. She served as chair of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited and the Ontario Council on University Affairs. Paikin is Jewish.

Paikin graduated from Hillfield Strathallan College in 1978 and enrolled in University of Toronto where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toronto (Victoria University, 1981). Paikin earned his master's degree in broadcast journalism from Boston University later this year. He spent his undergraduate degree and was the play-by-play voice of the Varsity Blues hockey and football teams on U. T Radio while playing for his team.

Personal life

Paikin is married to Francesca Grosso, the founding of Navigating Canada's Health Care System and a former head of strategy for then-Ontario health minister Tony Clement. Grosso, later became the health policy advisor to Ontario Premier Patrick Brown's Progressive Conservative Party, and was the ghostwriter on his memoirs.

Zach Paikin, one of his sons, is a former Liberal Party activist. Senator Frances Lankin's other son, Henry Paikin, works for Senator Frances Lankin.

He is a cousin of late Dr. Harry Paikin, a Hamilton school trustee who was a Labor-Protester candidate for the Ontario legislature in 1945. Carol Paikin Miller, a Hamilton school trustee and married to former NDP MPP Paul Miller, she is a cousin of former NDP MPP Paul Miller.

Career

Paikin was the anchor and Queen's Park reporter for CBC Television's Toronto station CBLT-TV and the host of a daily news and current affairs show on CBC Newsworld, as well as the host of a daily news and current affairs show on CBC Newsworld. He also worked in private radio and print media, including the Hamilton Spectator and Toronto radio station CHFI, where he was a Toronto City Hall reporter from 1982-1985.

Paikin began working at televisionO in 1992, co-hosting the political show Between the Lines until 1994. He also co-created the Queen's Park magazine Fourth Reading, which he curated for 14 years. Paikin began co-hosting (with Mary Hynes for two years and then Paula Todd) on Studio 2 in 1994, before he became a producer on Studio 2 in 2006. According to a weekly foreign affairs commentary show, he co-created and began hosting Diplomatic Immunity in 1998.

Studio 2 was canceled in 2006 and replaced by TVO's new product, The Agenda with Steve Paikin. Paikin is often chosen to moderate election debates. In 2006, 2008, 2013, and 2011, he served as a moderator for federal leaders debates in 2006, 2008, and 2011; and for Ontario provincial leaders debates in 2007.

Paikin has produced a number of documentaries, including the life and death of John Robarts; A Return to the Warsaw Ghetto; A Main Street Man; Balkan Madness; Teachers, Tories, and Turmoil. Paikin received the "Silver Screen Award" at the United States International Film and Video Festival in Regina and China's Shanghai Film Festival in 1993, as part of the Warsaw Ghetto.

In a report published by PR firm Hill+Knowlton Strategies in February 2012, Paikin was named as the Queen's Park journalist with the most Twitter followers.

He holds honorary doctorates from McMaster University, Victoria University, Laurentian University, York University, and Humber College, Centennial College, Mohawk College, and Fanshawe College. In October 2013, he was named chancellor of Laurentian University in Sudbury, a post that was later withdrawn as a result of the university's reorganisation in the face of financial difficulties in 2021. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in December 2013 and invested into the Order of Ontario.
