Stephanie Jayne Houghton (born 23 April 1988) is an English footballer who has played for and captained Manchester City and the England national team. Since her debut in 2007, she has played over 100 times for the England national team.

She suffered with serious injuries right away before the 2007 World Cup and Euro 2009, but she returned to play in the 2011 World Cup and Euro 2013.

She was voted England captain in January 2014. In Great Britain's four games, including champions against New Zealand and Brazil, Houghton came to prominence at the 2012 London Olympics, scoring three goals, including winners over New Zealand and Brazil.

Houghton joined Sunderland in her native North East England before going to Leeds United in 2007 and then Arsenal Ladies in 2010.

She broke into the Sunderland team as a striker before heading back to midfield and then defense. In the 2016 New Year Honours for services to football, Houghton was elected Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).

Steph Houghton Career

Club career

Houghton started playing for five years at Sunderland. She helped Sunderland win promotion from the Northern Division in 2005-06 and then received the FA Young Player of the Year Award in 2006–07. Houghton was a target for Arsenal and Everton after Sunderland were relegated that season. She then joined Leeds United Ladies. Houghton signed for Arsenal in August of this year after helping Leeds win the 2010 FA Women's Premier League Cup.

On December 5, 2013 it was announced that Houghton had signed an agreement to leave Arsenal for new WSL side Manchester City. On January 24, 2020, Houghton signed a two-year contract extension with Manchester City.

International career

At U16 schools, U19, U20, U21, and U23 levels, Houghton was active with England. Katie Chapman was called into the full squad for a match against Germany on October 25, 2006, when she was diagnosed with an illness. In the 5–1 loss to Aalen, she was a used substitute. She made her debut in the upcoming match, overtaking Emily Westwood after 73 minutes of a 6–0 victory over Russia in Milton Keynes on March 8. She got off to a 0 win over Scotland at Adams Park three days later. She missed the 2007 World Cup with a broken leg and Euro 2009 with a damaged Cruciate ligament.

In May 2009, Houghton was one of the first 17 female players to be offered central contracts by the Football Association. England finished last place in all three games at UEFA Women's Euro 2013; she characterized the result as "a major disappointment both personally and collectively as a team." She was named the next captain for England's team under new coach Mark Sampson's tenure in January 2014, beginning with a 1–1 draw with Norway in January 2014.

Houghton was named England's team captain again for the 2015 World Cup in Canada. In the round of 16, Houghton scored her first World Cup goal against Norway and was named Player of the Match during the quarterfinals with Canada, which qualified England for their first semi-finals ever.

On 11 November 2018, Houghton earned her 100th England cap against Sweden at New York Stadium in Rotherham, South Yorkshire. In May 2019, it was announced that Houghton had been chosen for the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup in France. In the Round of 16 matches against Cameroon, she scored a goal.

As a guard, Houghton was invited to the first Great Britain women's side for the 2012 Summer Olympics. She rose from left-back to lead Great Britain to victory in all three group games, as well as providing critical feedback to help ensure the team maintained without conceding a single goal. Houghton was also selected outside the tournament due to her outstanding appearance during the tournament.

VAR's biggest buzzkill moments: England denied in two semi-finals, epic Champions League ties decided by tiny margins and Arsenal's title hopes dealt big blow... as Coventry are denied one of FA Cup's great miracles

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 22, 2024
For Manchester United fans, it was the biggest of let-offs. For everybody else, it was yet more evidence VAR is sucking the joy out of football. Coventry City denied one of the greatest moments in FA Cup history - and one of the most miraculous comebacks of all-time - by mere inches. In the days before technology, Victor Torp's winner in the dying seconds of extra time would have been heralded as yet more magic from the world's greatest cup competition. It could well have also sealed Erik ten Hag's fate as United boss. But the ruthless accuracy of VAR and its offside lines stopped wild Coventry celebrations in their tracks and ultimately allowed United passage to the final.

Steph Houghton may not have had the fairy-tale ending she would've hoped for after missing out on England's Euro 2020 triumph, but her legacy goes far beyond the trophy hauls and that goal against Brazil

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 28, 2024
KATHRYN BATTE: The date is July 31, 2012, and Steph Houghton has just written her name into the history books. Houghton has made it three goals in three of Team GB's first two group matches in the Olympic Games, but this one is different. This one is against Brazil, against 70,584 protesters at Wembley Stadium. This one will make her a household name, marking the first true women's football icon in this country.

Steph Houghton has announced that she will resign at the end of the season after a stellar career with Man City and Arsenal, as well as captaining England

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 27, 2024
In an illustrious career, the Manchester City captain, 35, has won three Women's Super League titles, one with her current side and two at Arsenal. She captained England at two World Cups and one European Championship, as well as an international championship, while the Lionesses failed to third place at the 2015 World Cup. She earned 121 caps in a storious foreign career. Houghton began playing for Sunderland in 2002 and has also represented Leeds Carnegie and Arsenal before moving to City ten years ago.
