Carson said that pop music and artists who "tell stories by their songs" inspires her most, and that twentieth-century acts like The Beatles and Michael Jackson, as well as contemporary artists like Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift have influenced her.

Carson appeared in a BMI Latina artist showcase in 2013. She appeared on the soundtrack to the 2015 Descendants, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, as part of the cast. She appeared on the Billboard 200's Descendants 2 and Descendants 3 soundtracks, which reached their respective numbers 6 and 7.

Carson said she was recording her first album in a interview in August 2015. Carson had signed a joint worldwide record contract with both companies in March 2016. "Love Is the Name," Opus' "Live Is Life" interpolation, was her debut single. An alternate version of "Love is the Name" starring J. Balvin was released for the first time, and Carson and Balvin's music video were included in the version. "I'm Gonna Love You" was Carson's first commercial single on August 26, 2016. Carson's acting career began in 2014 when she guest-starred as Chelsea on Disney Channel's Austin & Ally. Carson was cast as a recurring character Soleil on MTV's film Faking It just a few months later. Revlon unveiled Carson's own collection, Revlon x Sofia Carson, which includes lipsticks and nail polishes, in June 2020. She was appointed a UNICEF Ambassador in October 2020. On February 28, 2021, she hosted the Golden Globes Red Carpet Pre-Show at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Revlon introduced One Heart, a new fragrance for Carson in April 2021. In 2022, she worked with the Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation to fund a bachelor's degree at Berklee College of Music.

Zendaya auditioned multiple times for the 2015 Disney Channel movie Descendants that centers around the teenage children of classic Disney villains. The 27-year-old actress tried hard to land a role in the original TV movie, said former Disney Channel vice president of casting and talent relations Cornelia Frame in an article on Tuesday by Deadline. 'Zendaya did audition many times for Descendants, and that was a big deal,' Frame said during a recent interview on the Magical Rewind podcast.
