Maya Christinah Xichavo Wegerif (born 9 May 1992) is a South African rapper, singer, actor, and poet. Sho Madjozi (Shor-mah-zee) is a South African rapper, singer, guitarist, actor, and poet.

Madjozi, who is regarded as one of Africa's finest performers, incorporates the Tsonga tradition in her music and public appearances.

Life and career

Madjozi was born on May 9th, 1992 in Shirley Village, Limpopo, the niece of Rosemary Phaweni and Marc Wegerif, who ran a non-governmental group established to help people with their land claims. Her mother is of African descent, while her father is of European descent. She was mainly raised by her mother after her parents divorced at an early age. Madjozi has half-sisters from both her mother and father's families. Madjozi enjoyed travel as her father, Marc Wegerif, travelled in particular areas of Africa – she followed him to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, where she was working for the charitable group Oxfam as a child. During 2016, she spent time selling clothes at Senegal's markets to ensure for family members.

Madjozi was invited to Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts, USA, to study creative writing and African studies after graduating high school at the International School of Tanganyika in Tanzania. MayaThePoet began writing poems while in the United States under the pen name MayaThePoet. The poems were about politics, identity, and race. Madjozi travelled to South Africa, where she gained a fellowship in Johannesburg, Johannesburg, and also planned music for other local artists. Under the stage name "Sho Madjozi," she began rapping and recording music. Madjozi came to fame after collaborating with rapper Okmalumkoolkat on the track "Ngiyashisa Bhe" and the hit single "Gqi."

Madjozi made her television appearance as one of the casts of Mzansi Magic's telenovela Isithembiso in April 2017. For the inaugural season, Tsakane Mboweni – a student activist deeply involved in student politics – appeared.

Madjozi unveiled her debut album, "Dumi HiPhone," starring disc jockey duo PS DJz on April 28, 2017, which was well received by the public. On Madjozi's debut album, the song didn't make it to the final track listing. She appeared on DJ Maphorisa BlaqBoy Music Presents Gqom Wave (2017), where she was also on the track "Probleme." "Huku" was her debut album's lead single on March 9, 2018. Trace Urban South Africa announced their partnership with Madjozi on June 27, making her the ambassador for their mobile pre-paid service TRACE Mobile. Madjozi and singer Chris Martin revealed and demonstrated how the Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100, was held in August, along with a YouTube video shared by Global Citizen. Sho Madjozi performed at Mandela 100, Beyonce and Jay-Z's headlined event, on December 2nd.

Madjozi's debut studio album, the Limpopo Champions League, was released on December 14, 2018. The album was also bolstered by the 5-minute short-film Trickshot, which was composed of several songs from the album. Madjozi received two awards at the 25th edition of the South African Music Awards for Newcomer of the Year and Best Female Album on June 1, 2019. She also received awards for categories: Best Music Video for "Huku" and Best Kwaito, Gqom & AmaPiano Album for the Limpopo Champions League. Madjozi was recognized with the BET Award for Best New International Act at the BET Awards 2019, which took place on June 23.

Madjozi was selected by Forbes magazine among the top 30 under 30 creatives category list for his contribution to the music and entertainment industry in July 2019, as well as Nigerian singer Burna Boy, South African actor, television and radio presenter Thando Thabethe, Ghanaian contemporary artist Joseph Awuah-Darko, also known as Okuntakinte and Kenyan film director, producer and screenwriter Njue Kevin.

Madjozi performed her song "John Cena" on the international music website COLORS on August 15, 2019, where she was inspired by pro wrestler John Cena's popular wrestler John Cena. The gqom-genre song dominated territories, mainly in South Africa, as it reached two million viewers, which is a welcome development for the [COLOURS] music website. Many celebrities, including rapper Missy Elliott, who retweeted her video on her Twitter page, applauded Madjozi's Facebook page, but professional wrestler John Cena posted Madjozi on his Instagram page, but professional wrestler John Cena celebrated Madjozi on his Instagram page. On September 27, 2019, she formally introduced "John Cena" as an official single. Madjozi appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show on November 7th to discuss the album. When performing as a visitor, John Cena came from backstage to surprise her. Her reaction went viral, as she said that it was a goal of hers to meet Cena himself.

She received the Best Gqom Artist award at the 4th ceremony of Mzansi Kwaito and House Music Awards.

She was reportedly signed to Epic Records in July 2020, a U.S. firm.

Madjozi's first mixtape What a Life was released on November 27, 2020. Makhadzi and Dr. Thomas Chauke appear in the film.
