Sherry Stringfield Career

Career

Christina "Blake" Thorpe played her first role on CBS Daytime's soap opera Guiding Light from 1989 to 1992. After three years of being off the show for a year in Europe, she returned to television on ABC's flagship, NYPD Blue. Laura Kelly, the ex-wife of officer John Kelly (David Caruso) during the first season (1993–94) of the series, appeared in Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Laura Kelly. She was released early from her employment if she was dissatisfied.

Stringfield became one of NBC's medical drama, ER,'s founding cast members. During each of the show's first three seasons, her personal success mirrored the show's success — she was nominated for an Emmy Award for lead actress. Stringfield was supposed to appear in five seasons of ER, but the actress left the series early in its third season due to a desire for a "normal life" and the freedom of the ER's grueling filming schedule. Stringfield was obliged to sign a no-work deal, preventing her from working on television for the remainder of her original term. Stringfield's decision to resign reportedly angered John Wells, the show's executive producer, because she left just as Dr. Lewis was embroiled in a tumultuous romance with Anthony Edwards' Dr. Mark Greene. "I would not describe the situation as pleasant," Stringfield said. The producers were stunned. They tried to talk me out of it. "It's taken a long time for me to get out of my job."

Stringfield's much-publicized departure is said to have "sent a small shock wave through Hollywood" and that her departure episode in November 1996 attracted 37 million viewers, the most popular night of the season for the NBC network. Stringfield resigned just as television executive Dick Robertson was ending a deal that promised millions of dollars in future earnings for the ER cast from television to syndication, essentially "walked away from a fortune."

Stringfield claims she was offered numerous times to reprise Susan Lewis' role in ER but declined each offer. However, she approached the creators of ER and then rejoined the cast in 2001, the show's eighth season, following her daughter's birth. Stringfield said, "I changed my mind." Stringfield continued, "I want to work now." "It's just made sense for me to return to ER." Stringfield's return to the United Kingdom attracted 26.7 million viewers, putting the show in first place in the ratings. Stringfield's character appeared in a special 'crossover' with NBC's New York City based police drama, During her second stint in ER, which aired in 2002. Stringfield remained in the role for four seasons in August 2005, but Stringfield revealed in August 2005 that she would leave the show again as the 12th season begins. Stringfield wrote, "I am extremely grateful for the time I spent on ER." "It's a wonderful performance, but there are so many people I would miss." But I'm up for new roles and new challenges. Stringfield returned to ER for the series "And in the End" in 2009.

Stringfield took a script analysis class and directed several plays at her alma mater after leaving ER in 1996. She appeared in films such as 54 (1998) and Autumn in New York (2000), as well as in the television films Border Line (1999) — directed by her ER co-star Anthony Edwards — and Going Home (2000), in which she appeared opposite Jason Robards. Touched by an Angel, an Angel-based show on CBS, she appeared as an Angel in 1999.

Stringfield was cast in the pilot episode of the CBS drama Company Town (2005), starring Michael Michele, Blair Underwood, Esai Morales, Gary Cole, and Catherine Bell, playing Angie Amberson, a mother of teenagers and a whistleblower on the investment company where she works. For the 2006 fall season, Company Town was unable to be approved. Jack Clements and Larry Sanitsky created the series. Stringfield appeared in Forfeit, an Andrew Shea film from 2007.
