Career
Shanna Moakler, a 17-year-old girl from Rhode Island, competed for Rhode Island in the Miss Teen USA 1992 pageant. She came in third in the preliminary examinations, sixth in the interview segment, and fifth in the swimsuit competition (scoring 9.115, 9.279, and 9.087 respectively). Moakler made it to the semi-finals and placed seventh overall. For 1993, Moakler captured the Miss Teen All American title.
In 1995, Moakler was named Miss New York USA and represented New York in the Miss USA pageant, which was held in South Padre Island, Texas. In the preliminaries and all of the interview and swimsuit divisions, Moakler came in second, with scores of 9.06, 9.62, and 9.61 respectively, and first in the evening gown competition, with a score of 9.86. Overall, Moakler was the first runner-up in the Miss USA Pageant. In May 1995, Moakler, at the age of 20, was named Miss Universe in the Bahamas.
Some aspects of her tenure as Miss USA, such as celebrity pool tournaments, were enjoyed by Moakler. Following allegations that Miss California USA Carrie Prejean had posed for risqué photographs and breached the terms of her employment, Donald Trump ruled there was no breach and therefore refused to strip Prejean of her crown. On May 13, 2009, Moakler resigned as co-director of the pageant, saying, "I cannot move forward supporting and promoting the Miss Universe Organization when I no longer believe in it or the terms I signed committing myself as a youth." However, it was revealed on November 13, 2009, that Moakler had returned to the Miss California USA corporation, about the same time Carrie Prejean was dethroned.
In 2008, Moakler ran a pro-veterarianism commercial for PETA, and she stood nominated for a PETA anti-fur campaign, claiming that fur coats will not be given as prizes as long as she is the director of Miss Nevada.
Moakler began modeling at the age of 15. She appeared in several publications, including Cosmopolitan and Brentwood. She has worked with Playboy since January 2001, and has been named Playmate of the Month for the month. She has confessed that posing nude was "a little scary at first."
