He began doing stand-up comedy in his teenage years.

Freaks and Geeks was officially cancelled after one season due to poor viewership shortly after he moved to Los Angeles for his role.

Rogen was later hired as a writer on the sitcom Undeclared, which also rented him as a writer. Apatow led him on a film career after landing his career as a staff writer on the final season of Da Ali G Show.

He was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series as a staff writer.

Early life

Seth Aaron Rogen was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, on April 15, 1982, to a Jewish family of Ukrainian and Russian origins. Sandy Belogus' mother, a social worker, and his American father, Mark Rogen, served for non-profit organizations and as an assistant director of the Workmen's Circle Jewish fraternal group. Rogen has said, "I certainly identify with being Canadian much more than being American" because he grew up in Canada. He has characterized his parents, who lived on kibbutz Beit Alfa in Israel, as "conservative Jewish socialists." Danya is Rogen's older sister. He attended Talmud Torah Elementary School and Point Grey Secondary School, incorporating several of his classmates' writing, and began a ten-year participation in kyokushin karate. He was also known for his stand-up comedy at Camp Miriam, a Habonim Dror camp.

"As soon as I learned you could be funny as a child, I did not want to pursue any other than comedy," Rogen said. He got his first break in show business at the age of 12 after enrolling in a comedy workshop led by Mark Pooley. Laughs about his bar mitzvah, his grandparents, and his camp counsellors were among his early comedy routines. He'd be a teenager and do stand-up comedy routines at bars like bar mitzvahs and small parties before transitioning to bars. A mohel was paid to write parody jokes. He co-wrote a rough draft of Superbad with childhood friend Evan Goldberg, who had attended bar mitzvah classes at the age of 13. Rogen and Goldberg spent the remainder of their time in high school polishing the script based on their adolescent experiences. They were initially worried that American Pie (1999) had beaten them to the film, but then they decided that the film "completely avoids any authentic interaction between characters," which is what we're looking for."

His mother was always supportive of his comic efforts, and he would often take him to stand-up gigs at the comedy club Yuk Yuk Yuk's. He finished second in the Vancouver Amateur Comedy Contest at 16 years old, owing to his deadpan humour. When Rogen was 16 years old, his father lost his career and his mother lost hers, causing them to sell their house and move to a much smaller apartment. After attending a local casting call, he landed a role on Judd Apatow's television show Freaks and Geeks. Rogen dropped out of high school, began working for Apatow, and then moved with his family to Los Angeles. Rogen paid the bills and was still the highest wage earner at just 16.

Personal life

In 2004, Rogen began dating writer/actress Lauren Miller. While he was working on Da Ali G Show, the two met. The couple got engaged on September 29, 2010 and married in Sonoma County, California, on October 2, 2011. In a few of Rogen's films, Miller has had minor on-screen appearances. They have confirmed that they do not want to have children.

With his companion Evan Goldberg, Rogen created a cannabis brand in Toronto, Ontario. He started making ceramics after attending pottery classes with his wife in 2017. Kenneth Price, an artist, has influenced him.

Rogen revealed on Twitter in January 2021 that he has mild Tourette syndrome, which is related to his family's business.

Seth Rogen Career

Career

In Apatow's Freaks and Geeks, a cult hit series first launched in 1999, Rogen's acting debut was as Ken Miller, a cynical, acerbic "freak." Freaks and Geeks first aired in 1999, based on a group of teenagers' lives. Despite being well researched, the show was NBC's lowest-viewed program and was cancelled after a season due to poor ratings. Apatow selected him as the lead in another of his performances, Undeclared, after being impressed with Rogen's improvisational abilities. Rogen was supposed to play a rather popular yet nerdy college freshman, but the network did not think he was leading man stuff. Apatow preferred not to attend the performance rather than go along. Rogen also served as a staff writer on the short-lived film.

Rogen did not get many auditions after the show's cancellation in 2002, which was not surprising to him because he had always believed he'd have more success as a writer. He'll soon be a part of Apatow's "frat pack," a close-knit group made up of Steve Carell and Paul Rudd. "I'm such a comedy buff" that a grown man spends so much time with a teenage Rogen, Apatow said: "I'm such a comedy fan that, even though he's 16, I'm sure I'm hanging out with one of the great comics." Apatow is expected to appear in ten days with strange demands for Rogen and Goldberg, such as the ability to convert an idea of him into a film in ten days and come up with 100 one-page scripts. "Obviously, I can't stress how important Judd's been to my work," the actor wrote in 2009.

Rogen appeared in Donnie Darko (2001) and Anchorman: Ron Burgundy (2004). In 2004, Sacha Baron Cohen's last season as a staff writer was a major career highlight for him. Rogen was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award, along with the show's other writers. In Apatow's well-reviewed buddy comedy directorial debut feature The 40-Year Virgin (2005), he became known to audiences as one of the main characters' co-workers. Rogen also co-produced it and improvised all his dialogue. "Rogen] hadn't done any screen work that showed he could put on as good and convincing a role as he does with Cal," MTV's John Constantine wrote. Rogen, as well as co-star Rudd and Romany Malco, were funny in their own right, and Orlando Sentinel's Roger Moore believed Rogen had his scenes in the film, but Seattle Times writer Moira Macdonald said the actor was "drooplessly deadpan." Matt Dillon, Kate Hudson, and Owen Wilson all appeared in You, Me and Dupree (2006), a critically panned comedy starring Matt Dillon, Kate Hudson, and Owen Wilson.

In yet another Apatow film, Knocked Up (2007), a romantic comedy involving the repercussions of a drunken one-night standoff between his slacker character and Katherine Heigl's just-promoted media person, which resultes in an unintended pregnancy, his breakthrough came when Universal Studios accepted him for the lead. Apatow had contacted Rogen about potential role arcs, but the actor had several high-concept science fiction plots to explore upon completion of The 40-Year-Old Virgin. The two people decided on the accidental pregnancy theory of this production after Apatow promised that he would do better in real life situations. Despite being a lead actor, Rogen called shooting sex scenes with Heigl "nerve-racking" and found some familiarity with the supporting cast since, although Rogen was not all about him. Knocked Up was a critical and commercial success on June 1, receiving a 90 percent approval rating from review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes and grossing $219 million. Rogen also received favorable feedback. He served as a supporting officer in Superbad, which he had written with his writing partner and was co-produced by Apatow later this year. Michael Cera and Jonah Hill play the main roles, two teenage best friends whose party's agendas went wrong, based on their roles. Critics loved the film and their writing, with critics finding it to be very true. For the second week in a row, it topped the US box office. He made a vocal cameo appearance in the animated film Shrek the Third, which was also released in 2007. In October 2007, Rogen hosted Saturday Night Live.

Rogen's 2008 film project included Jimmy Hayward's Horton Hears a Who!, an animated film based on Rogen's Morton the Mouse, and The Spiderwick Chronicles, in which Rogen performed a hobgoblin. Drillbit Taylor was also written by Rogen and starring Owen Wilson as the homeless titular character. He based the script on a 70-page script written by John Hughes. Critics who disagreed with the film's plot believed it was sarcastic, with a mature man becoming three kids' bodyguard and throttling their bullies, had no interest and was drawn out. "If Superbad were remade as a gimmicky Nickelodeon film, it would probably look something like Drillbit Taylor," Josh Bell wrote in the Las Vegas Weekly. With Jack Black and Angelina Jolie, he lends his voice to another animated film, this time Kung Fu Panda. It did exceptionally well in theatres, grossing more than $630 million. In July, Rogen made a cameo appearance in the comedy Step Brothers, which was released in July. The stoner action comedy Pineapple Express, directed by David Gordon Green at Columbia Pictures, was directed by Rogen, Goldberg, and Apatow. Apatow created it, but Rogen and Goldberg wrote it. Rogen was selected to play a 25-year-old boy who mistakenly witnesses a murder when delivering a subpoena. James Franco was played as the hippie pot dealer with whom he went on the run. When asked about the book's inspiration, Rogen said he wrote what he knew. In August, Pineapple Express was introduced to theaters and earned $101 million in ticket sales against its $27 million production budget. Movie reviewers lauded it, appreciating their appearances and the film's comedic humor.

Rogen and Goldberg, according to Empire, would write an episode for the animated television series The Simpsons in April 2008. In the episode titled "Homer the Whopper," which debuted the twentieth-first season, he also played a character. Kevin Smith's romantic comedy Zack and Miri Make a Porno ranked out 2008 for the actor. He and Elizabeth Banks portrayed title characters: Pennsylvania roommates who want to make some extra money by making an adult film together. Rogen told MTV, "It's really gross film," she said, but "It's absolutely mad to me that Hostel is fine, with people gouging their eyes out and shit like that." However, you can't have two people having sex; that's too much." The picture was released by The Weinstein Company on Halloween but the box office was dissatisfied. He and Reese Witherspoon played a character in the animated science fiction Monsters vs. Aliens (2009), which did well commercially, grossing $381.5 million. He appeared in the Jody Hill-directed mall cop comedy Observe and Report, in which he portrays bipolar mall security guard Ronnie Barnhart. On April 10, the film debuted in theaters. A change in Rogen's acting style from playing laid-back roles to playing a more tragic role; Wesley Morris of The Boston Globe opined that "his vulnerability makes his coarseness safe." Ronnie is something completely new to Rogen. There has never been a time when Vulnerability was unheardent. He's shameless." Rogen appeared in Apatow's third directorial film, Funny People, with Adam Sandler later this year. Rogen starred in a young, inexperienced comedy, while Sandler played a mentor of sorts to his character; the film had more dramatic elements in it than Apatow's previous attempts. Funny People was a commercial failure, with the business falling short of earning back its $75 million budget. Critics generally applauded the film, with a general agreement that it had "noble emotional depth." In 2009, Rogen appeared in Lonely Island's "Like a Boss" film, in which he appeared, premiered.

A production of The Green Hornet was produced by Rogen and Goldberg in January 2011, following years of growth. Rogen decided to do a re-imagining of the title character. He was the film's producer and also portrayed himself as the lead actor. Rogen later confessed to being overwhelmed by the company's $120 million budget. "It's insane." But it's not so much the amount of money that's stressful; rather, it's all the things that go along with making a movie of that size." To play the slim crime fighter, the actor adhered to a strict weight loss regimen. The Green Hornet was a critical disappointment; Adam Graham of the Detroit News called it "a massive, sloppy, grating mess of a movie" and Bill Goodykoontz of the Arizona Republic found that it had fallen apart. Nevertheless, it opened at number one at the box office, earning $33 million in the first weekend and then moved to more than $225 million. In 2011, Rogen and Evan Goldberg founded Point Grey Pictures, which was named after the school's Point Grey Secondary School, which they both attended.

In Paul (2011)'s science fiction film The title character, a grey alien, was voiced and motion captured by Rogen. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost appeared in the film as a pair of geeks who aid Paul in escaping from FBI agents. He reprised his voice in Kung Fu Panda 2, as well as produced and played a supporting role in Jonathan Levine's 50/50. The drama about cancer was based on an autobiographical script written by screenwriter Will Reiser and was published in September 2011. Rogen's fourth film of 2011 was titled Taking This Waltz, which was played by Michelle Williams. He portrayed a man whose wife (played by Michelle Williams) and a man whose wife (played by Michelle Williams) looks at a new relationship with another man. In addition to writing two episodes, Rogen played Dirty Randy, a librarian and pornographer in the sitcom The League from 2011 to 2015. In February 2012, Rogen hosted the 27th Independent Spirit Awards in February, 2012, as well as Barbra Streisand's appearance in the road movie The Guilt Trip, which also stars Barbra Streisand. In the film, an entrepreneur (Rogen) invites his mother (Streisand) on a road trip as he tries to market his latest product while also reuniting her with a lost love.

Rogen, Jay Baruchel, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson, Craig Robinson, and Danny McBride made their directorial debut with This Is the End in 2013, a film about themselves facing a global apocalypse. On its first weekend, the film received rave reviews and was ranked second in the box office. In May 2013, Rogen appeared in multiple flashback scenes as a young George Bluth Sr. (played by Jeffrey Tambor). Blake J. Harris co-wrote the foreword for the 2014 book Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo, and the War That Defined a Generation. And it was announced that you are working on a Goldberg Adaptation.

In 2014, Rogen appeared on Saturday Night Live for the third time. Rogen appeared in Neighbors with Rose Byrne and Zac Efron, which was directed by Nicholas Stoller in May. Rogen and Byrne played a couple who came into conflict with a fraternity led by Efron's character's life next door. Rogen's highest-grossing non-animated film, with grossing over $270 million worldwide, the film became Rogen's highest-grossing non-animated film. After conducting an interview with Kim Jong-un, Rogen and Evan Goldberg co-directed and co-wrote the story to the action comedy The Interview, starring Rogen and James Franco as a pair of journalists hired by the CIA to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. If North Korea did not prohibit The Interview in June 2014, it threatened a "merciless" retaliation on the US if it did not prohibit The Interview, calling the film "an act of war" and a "wanton act of terror" and "wanton conduct of violence" and making Rogen himself a "gangster filmmaker." Sony Pictures announced in December that it would be canceling the film after a cyber attack on the studio, allegedly tied to North Korea and threats launched later by Kim Jong-un. Sony later made the film available online and it permitted theatrical release on December 25, 2014, attracting mixed reviews from film critics. While Variety's Scott Foundas of Variety found the film to be "about as funny as a communist food shortage, and even as long," Robbie Collin, a newspaper critic, said it was "a raucous, abrasive, snort-out-loud satire with mischief in its heart and methane in its gut." It grossed $11.3 million in theatres, but it had a good online sales and rentals. Rogen appeared in the comedy 22 Jump Street as the double of Jonah Hill's character and as a telegrapher in James Franco's drama The Sound and the Fury as a telegrapher in 2014. During the time, Rogen and Goldberg, along with his Point Grey Pictures company, had formed a joint venture with major client Good Universe to produce mainstream comedy films.

In the Danny Boyle-directed Steve Jobs biopic (2015), Rogen portrayed Apple Inc. co-founder Steve Wozniak, which is based on Aaron Sorkin's screenplay. Rogen was praised for his role in the film and the actor was praised for his "excellent work" by Wozniak himself. Rogen appeared in the Christmas-themed comedy The Night Before as three of the best friends who annually reunite to celebrate Christmas Eve in November 2015. In 2016, he reprised his voice role in Kung Fu Panda 3 and the Neighbors sequel Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising. Rogen, along with Goldberg and Sam Catlin, created the Sony Pictures Television television series Preacher, which premiered on AMC in May 2016. The show is based on Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's comic book series, and it follows a small-town preacher Jesse Custer (played by Dominic Cooper) who has a superpower that allows him to order others to do as he pleases. In addition to starring Frank—a sausage that aims to escape his fate in a supermarket—he co-wrote and produced the animated comedy Sausage Party, his last release of 2016. Sausage Party became the most commercially lucrative R-rated animated film of all time, taking over South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (1999). Lindsey Bahr, a writer for the Associated Press, wrote about the film: "There is no one out there making comedies quite like Rogen and Goldberg." They're putting their definitive stamp on the modern American comedy one decency-smashing double entendre at a time."

Future Man, starring Josh Hutcherson, premiered on the streaming service Hulu in November 2017. Rogen, along with Evan Goldberg, produced the science fiction comedy series Future Man, starring Josh Hutcherson. In the Franco-directed film The Room, which chronicles the development of the 2003 film The Room, Rogen and Goldberg co-directed a short commercial film for Walmart titled Bananas Town, and Rogen and Goldberg co-directed a short commercial film called Bananas Town. Hilarity for Charity, an organization that raises funds for Alzheimer's research and support, has hosted an annual fundraising comedy competition named after the group. In April 2018, Netflix carried the sixth event on Netflix. Rogen would make public service announcements in his hometown Vancouver's TransLink transit system and Toronto's Toronto Transit Commission, as announced in July 2018. In the 2018 comedy-drama Like Father, directed by Rogen's wife, Lauren Miller, Rogen co-starred Kristen Bell and Kelsey Grammer as the love interest of Bell's character. Rogen appeared in the romantic comedy Long Shot as an unemployed journalist re-connects with his childhood passion and babysitter (Theron), who has since become a prominent political figure.

Rogen appeared in the 2019 version of The Lion King (1994), portraying the warthog Pumbaa, who rescues the film's protagonist Simba with his buddy Timon, voiced by Donald Glover and Billy Eichner respectively. He performed three songs in the film, three of which were also included on the soundtrack. "I don't think I'm right for every role, even in movies I'm making," Rogen said. Pumbaa was one of many roles I didn't think I'm good for, but I knew I'd do well." Despite tense critical reception surrounding the film, it became one of the best-grossing films of all time, and Rogen and Eichner were praised for their chemistry. In 2019, Rogen also produced the comedy Good Boys starring Jacob Tremblay for Universal Pictures and The Boys and Black Monday, as the pilot for the new film with Goldberg. Allen the Alien appeared in In 2021's animated film Invincible, in which he also acts as producer. In 2014, Rogen shot scenes for James Franco's film Zeroville, which wasn't announced until 2019.

In Tim Ferriss' self-help book Tools of Titans, Rogen has a guest chapter giving tips.

Yearbook, Rogen's first book, was released in May 2021. The yearbook is a memoir that includes essays from Rogen's adolescence to his Hollywood experiences.

In September 2021, Nintendo Direct revealed that Rogen would be voicing Donkey Kong in the 2022 computer-animated film The Super Mario Bros. Movie, as well as a spin-off film based on the character.
