Eddie Peng Yu-yen (Chinese: pinyin: Péng Yàn) is a Taiwanese Canadian actor, singer, and model who was born on March 24, 1982. Peng ranked 75th on Forbes' Celebrity 100 list in 2013, ranked 87th in 2015, 46th in 2017, and 38th in 2019.

Personal life

Peng was born in Penghu, Taiwan. At the age of thirteen, he moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He graduated from Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School in 2000. He was eventually accepted to the University of British Columbia and majored in economics, but he later dropped out to begin his acting career.

Peng announced support for cotton grown in mainland China in March 2021, after several firms had expressed reservations about human rights abuses.

Career

Peng began his career in Tomorrow, directed by Yang Daqing, who appeared in the film during a summer holiday in Taiwan. Asunaro Hakusho, a Japanese manga series created by Fumi Saimon, has been adapted for this film. Since the romantic comedy of Peng gained traction, the peng created a teenage fanbase. In 2003, he played his first leading role in the Taiwanese drama Scent of Love, which tells the tale of two star-crossed lovers who lived and died to find one another in their many incarnations.

He appeared in the idol drama When Dolphin Met Cat in 2005, portraying an autistic youth. Peng took one month to learn how to communicate with dolphins from a qualified instructor to prepare himself for filming. He appeared in Chinese xianxia drama The Young Warriors, which became extremely popular during their run and have increased interest in the mainland.

Peng made his big screen debut in the film Exit No.6 (2006), directed by Yu-Hsien Lin. The film put him on the radar of many film directors, including Tsui Hark, who starred him in his 2008 romantic comedy All About Women. Peng was nominated for his role in My DNA Says I Love You in 2007 at the 44th Golden Horse Film Festival and Awards.

Peng was embroiled in a labor dispute against his former boss in 2009, marking his nadir of his career. Peng also appeared in Hear Me, directed by Fen-Fen Cheng, about a delivery boy who falls for a hearing impaired child and communicates with her using sign language. A week before the opening of the 21st Summer Deaflympics, the film became the most highly distributed locally produced film at Taiwan's box office.

He released It Has To Be You, his debut EP, which featured 5 songs under Avex Group's leadership, after winning the case in 2010.

He appeared in the film Close to You for the male lead. Peng trained for three months prior to filming in order to portray his role as a boxer. At the 2nd Macau International Film Festival, he was nominated in the Best Actor category for his role.

Peng made a breakthrough in the 2011 teen film Jump Ashin! starring Yu-Hsien Lin. According to reports, he spent eight months to be an actor. The film was a critical and commercial success. Peng received awards for his best actor at the 48th Golden Horse Film Festival and 13th Taipei Film Festival, which were both a turning point in his career.

He appeared in romance films Love You and Love; a police drama The war Innocence of People; Tai Chi 0, showcasing his versatility; and Tai Chi Hero, a romance film.

Peng appeared in the 2013 film Unbeatable, portraying a Mixed martial arts warrior. Peng trained boxing for four hours a day to reflect his image. Unbeatable was the best grossing local production at the Hong Kong box office, earning positive feedback. At the 33rd Hong Kong Film Award and the 50th Golden Horse Film Festival and Awards, Peng was nominated for Best Supporting Actor. Peng appeared in the romantic comedy A Wedding Invitation alongside Bai Baihe in the same year. The film earned nearly 200 million yuan ($32 million) in China, making it the highest-grossing Chinese-South Korean film ever produced.

Peng appeared in Rise of the Legend, the newest film about the renowned Kung-Fu master, in 2014. According to reports, he took up ten hours of martial arts every day to prepare for the role. Peng was nominated in the Best Actor category at the 34th Hong Kong Film Award. He appeared in historical drama Sound of the Desert and coming-of-age film Fleet of Time, which were both commercial hits that year. Peng's success in film and television brought his career to a new level.

Peng appeared in To the Fore, a professional cyclist, in 2015. During filming, he reportedly obtained training and earned credentials for competitive racing. At the 88th Academy Awards, the film was chosen to represent Hong Kong in the best foreign-language film category. Peng was also named the first Chinese Goodwill Ambassador of the 2015 Tour de France. Peng appeared in The Last Women Standing in the same year as Shu Qi.

Peng also made another breakthrough in 2016 with the film Operation Mekong, in which he portrayed a hardcore undercover agent alongside veteran actor Zhang Hanyu. The film has received critical acclaim, and it is the highest grossing Chinese cop film to date. In addition, Zhang Ziyi appeared in the romance film Run for Love, the police drama Cold War 2 as an antagonist, war epic Call of Heroes, and Zhang Yimou's historical epic The Great Wall.

Peng appeared in Han Han Han Han Han Han's film Duckweed alongside Deng Chao and Zanilia Zhao in 2017. The sleeper achieved commercial and critical success. He appeared in Ann Hui's war film Our Time Will Come, portraying a complex anti-hero. Peng's first film, a fantasy epic Wu Kong, in which he played the title character, attracted the attention of the world. The film was a box office hit and the box office took home US$100 million.

Peng appears in Jiang Wen's wuxia film Hidden Man in 2018.

Peng appeared in The Rescue, a Dante Lam thriller film focusing on an emergency rescue specialist, which was released in 2020. He is also expected to appear in Love After Love, directed by Ann Hui On-wah.
