Born William Delano Wilson, March 29, 1942 – October 6, 2018) Scott Wilson (born William Delano Wilson) was an American actor.

He had more than 50 film credits, including In the Heat of the Night, In Cold Blood, The Great Gatsby, Dead Man Walking, Pearl Harbor, and Junebug.

Wilson received a Golden Globe Award for his work in William Peter Blatty's The Ninth Configuration in 1980.

On the AMC television show The Walking Dead (2011-2014; 2018), he played veterinarian Hershel Greene.

He appeared on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation as casino mogul Sam Braun, as well as a lead role on Netflix's The OA as Abel Johnson.

Life and career

Wilson was born in Thomasville, Georgia, in the small Southern town. In his first three films, he made his screen debut portraying characters convicted of murder. Wilson played a murder suspect in In the Heat of the Night (1967). Wilson appeared in Sparta, Mississippi, where (In the Heat of the Night) takes place on March 15, 2014 to commemorate the city's 175th anniversary in reference to his debut appearance in the film.

In the year's sequel to In Cold Blood, which was based on Truman Capote's book of the same name. Wilson portrayed real-life murderer Richard Hickock, while Robert Blake portrayed Perry Smith, his partner.

Wilson and Blake were cast in the leading roles, specifically because they were unknown at the time. For the roles, the director chose Steve McQueen and Paul Newman. Wilson later explained Brooks' casting motivations: "Brooks recruited two 'unknowns' and wanted to keep it that way." We were treated like two murderers he had somehow escaped from."

Wilson was shot on the front page of Life magazine on May 12, 1967, 1967. Wilson was just 25 years old at the time. Truman Capote appears on the cover of a Kansas highway, standing between Wilson and Blake. The headline, Nightmare Revisited, appears on the front page. Wilson appeared in The Great Gatsby in 1974 opposite Robert Redford. When visiting his 97-year-old mother in Georgia, Wilson was given the opportunity to attend the program. He has referred to his mother as "a fan of the show." Wilson left the show in December 2013 after his character was killed off in the season 4 mid-season finale "Too Far Gone." However, he made two guest appearances since his character's death, as well as his last on-screen appearance in the fifth episode of The Walking Dead's fifth season.

In a 2011 interview with Access Atlanta's Rodney Ho, Wilson talked about his work: "It's been up and down." It's always been so. You have dry spells. You are starting over at different times. If you like it, you'll stick with it for as long as you can. That's what I'm doing. I've achieved more than I ever imagined. I don't want to be a well-known movie actress. I can be a pedestrian who does not get muggled on the streets and not get mobbed. I want to be the finest an actor as I can be. I'm still striving to be as good as I can be." Wilson was filming scenes for The Walking Dead in Senoia, Georgia, at the time of the interview. Wilson appeared in a recurring role in the Amazon original series Bosch in 2014. In 2016, he appeared in The OA, a Netflix series.

In 1977, he married Heavenly Koh Wilson.

Wilson died of leukemia at his Los Angeles home on October 6, 2018. He died just a few hours after starting NYCC (New York Comic Con). Wilson's memory was honored in the final credits of The Walking Dead's ninth season's "A New Beginning," which aired the next day.
