Background and education
Scott Avett was born in 1976 in Cheyenne, Wyoming, to Jim Avett and Susan (Gleason) Avett of Concord, North Carolina. Reverend Clegg Avett, a Methodist minister, and Martha (Hogan) Avett, a former concert pianist, were among Scott's paternal grandparents. Scott is the middle of three children. Bonnie, his sister, was born in 1973. Seth's brother, the youngest, was born in 1980. Before both retired, his father owned a sewing shop in Concord and his mother taught elementary school. Jim Avett, a recording artist for Ramseur Records, performs gospel songs with his daughter Bonnie and his sons at The Avett Brothers' show. Scott Avett, a freshman at East Carolina University, aspired to majoring in radio broadcasting with an art minor. However, Avett, inspired by mentor Leland Wallin's example, decided against academic pursuits, gaining a bachelor's degree in communications in 1999 as well as a bachelor of fine arts degree in painting the following year.
Personal life
Scott Avett married Sarah, who gave birth to Eleanor, a baby girl in 2003, in late October 2008. Two shows in Texas would be postponed due to the birth of his second child, a son named Maxwell, in April 2011. When he re-wrote the lyrics to his song "Murder In The City," which was first released in 2007, Avett revealed the sex of his baby in London. The original lyrics were "make sure my sister knows I love her, make sure my mother knows the same" and were changed to "make sure your daughter knows I love her and make sure her mother knows the same." In March 2015, Luke, the second son, was born. At a show near Seattle in July 2016, Scott sang "make sure my girls know I love them," makes sure my boy knows the same, and remember that there is nothing worth sharing like the love that allows us to reveal our names."
Scott Avett is the grandson of Reverend Clegg W. Avett (1914-1976), a Methodist minister whose sermons inspired Scott's faith.
