Sara Ullrika Watkins (born June 8, 1981) is an American singer-songwriter and fiddler.

Watkins debuted in 1989 as fiddler and founding member of the progressive bluegrass band Nickel Creek, as well as her brother Sean and mandolinist Chris Thile.

Watkins also plays the ukulele and the guitar, and he has appeared on stage and toured with the Decemberists as well as playing percussion. Nickel Creek, Watkins, has released five studio albums, one compilation album, and seven singles.

Watkins released three solo albums: Sara Watkins and Sun Midnight Sun on Nonesuch Records and Young in All the Wrong Ways on New West Records during the band's seven-year absence:

Watkins married Todd Cooper in Vista, California, on August 16, 2008. She and her husband were expecting a child in September and revealed it on Twitter on June 15, 2017.

2007–present: Solo career

In late 2005, Watkins said in a PopMatters interview that she wrote "Anthony" as her first solo-written recorded song, "Anthony," that she "definitely [makes] the effort [to write more], but that doesn't come naturally to me." Nor does it come naturally to the guys; I suspect they've only been doing it for a long time."

Watkins signed to Nonesuch Records as a solo artist in fall 2008 and her self-titled debut solo album was published on April 7, 2009. In February 2008, Watkins began recording the album, which was also recorded in Nashville and Los Angeles. Sara Watkins was created by bassist John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin fame, who first appeared with Watkins on a Mutual Admiration Society tour in 2004.

In 2008, Watkins appeared in the United States as an opening act. Tift Merritt's opening act on the West Coast in March and April, as well as performing a 17-date tour with Donavon Frankenreiter in October. She appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on bass, Questlove of The Roots on drums, and her brother Sean Watkins on guitar, all on April 14, 2009. She made her Minnesota State Fair debut on August 28, 2011. In 2012, she toured with Jackson Browne as the opening act on his acoustic winter tour.

Watkins revealed on Twitter in September 2011 that she would begin working on a second album in the fall of 2011. Watkins' second solo album, Sun Midnight Sun, was released on Nonesuch Records in May 2012. Watkins was named "Instrumentalist of the Year" at the American Music Honors & Awards in 2016.

Watkins appeared in an advertisement for cell phone provider Cingular Wireless in 2002, as well as other well-known bluegrass artists. Watkins, Sean Watkins, John Paul Jones, and Pete Thomas collaborated on an EP by the Mutual Admiration Society Solo Sampler (recorded in 2000), as well as a short tour.

On John Mayer's 2012 album Born and Raised, Watkins performed violin and sang on "A Face To Call Home." During 2012 and 2013, she appeared alongside Jackson Browne, both as an opening act and accompanying him on stage.

"Watkins Family Hour" is a weekly activity at the Largo nightclub in Los Angeles for Watkins and her brother Sean. Benmont Tench (formerly of Soul Coughing) and bassist Sebastian Steinberg (formerly of Soul Coughing) are regular participants, while other Largo family entertainers like Jon Brion, Fiona Apple, Don Heffington, Greg Leisz, and former Nickel Creek bandmate Chris Thile are all in town. The irregular collaborations culminated in the release of a 2015 album and tour under the same name. Watkins toured extensively in 2015 with Sarah Jarosz and Aoife O'Donovan (of Crooked Still fame). On October 10, 2015, the three siblings, who now play under the name I'm With Her, hosted the radio show A Prairie Home Companion. Watkins appeared on "June & Johnny" on Jon Foreman's 2015 album "The Wonderlands: Darkness."

She appeared on Phoebe Bridgers' record Punisher on track 10 "Graceland Too" in 2020.

In 2021, she was a fiddle on The Killers' record Pressure Machine (Tracks: West Fields, Cody, Pressure Machine) and violin on In Another Life.

In Vista, California, Watkins married Todd Cooper in her parents' backyard on August 16, 2008. On June 15, 2017, she and her husband revealed on Twitter that she and her husband were expecting a child in September.
