Sara Rue was born Sara Schlackman, the granddaughter and former actor of Joan Schlackman (née Rue), a New York City municipal employee and former actor, and Marc Schlackman, a stage manager. She was born in New York, where her parents were active in Broadway theatre. She is Jewish.
