Sandrine Bonnaire Career

Life and career

Bonnaire was born in the town of Gannat, Allier, in the Auvergne region of France. She was born into a working-class family, the seventh of eleven children. She grew up in Grigny, Essonne. She began acting in 1983, when she appeared in the Maurice Pialat film Nos Amours at age 16. She appeared in Paris as a teen from Paris starting her sexual awakening. She was given the César Award for Most Promising Actress in 1984.

Agnès Varda's second César Award winner came in 1985, when she played the central role in Vagabond (Sans toit ni loi), directed by Agnès Varda. She portrays a vagrant who suffers both physically and morally. The film premiered at the 42nd Venice International Film Festival, where it received the Golden Lion award. The jury selected Bonnaire's work among the best of the year, but decided against awarding her the Volpi Cup for Best Actress because both the actresses and actresses were in films that received major accolades.

Bonnaire appeared on Under the Sun of Satan (Sous le soleil de Satan), which earned the Palme d'Or at the 1987 Cannes Film Festival. Patrice Leconte's directorial debut in 1989 followed Monsieur Hire, as well as further collaboration with directors Jacques Doillon and Claude Sautet.

Bonnaire appeared as an ostensibly simple maid in Claude Chabrol's much acclaimed thriller La Cérémonie in 1995. Both Bonnaire and co-star Isabelle Huppert's film and its actors received awards around the world, including Best Actress at the 52nd Venice Film Festival.

In 2004, Bonnaire appeared in another Leconte film, Intimate Strangers, which was an arthouse box-office hit in the United States.

Bonnaire appeared in Gal Morel's film about reverse immigrant emigration in 2017, Prendre le grand. Académie André Delvaux gave her an Honorary Magritte Award at the 8th Magritte Awards.
