Sandra Lee Christiansen (born July 3, 1966) is an American television chef and author.
Lee is best known for her "Semi-Homemade" cooking method, which Lee describes as using 70% pre-packaged products and 30% fresh produce.
She served as Governor Andrew Cuomo's partner from 2011 to 2019, when the couple broke up.
Early life
Lee was born in Santa Monica, California, in 1966, the granddaughter of Vicky Svitak and Wayne Waldroop, who had been high school sweethearts. Sandra Waldroop, her mother, and her younger sister, Cindy, were sent by her mother to live with their paternal grandmother Lorraine Waldroop when she was two years old. Lee's mother and her children migrated to Sumner, Washington, where they later found a new stepfather, who had given the spelling of (Christiansen) Lee in 1972. Vicky had three children in the 1970s: Kimber, Richie, and John Paul. Lee effectively raised her four younger siblings due to her mother's sickness and the absence of her and her siblings' parents. Lee learned how to feed her younger siblings frugally with a combination of food stamps and welfare payments in her youth, an experience that influenced her future approach to cooking.
Lee attended the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse after graduating from Onalaska High School in Onalaska, Wisconsin. Lee's family is Catholic, according to her. She was first raised as a Seventh-day Adventist, but her family later became Jehovah's Witnesses.
She left college to live near a family in Malibu, California, in December of her junior year. She completed a two-week recreational course at Le Cordon Bleu in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
Personal life
She was married from 2001 to 2005, becoming married to then-KB Home CEO and philanthropist Bruce Karatz, for whom she converted to Judaism.
Lee began a relationship with Andrew Cuomo, the 56th Governor of New York from 2011 to his resignation in August 2021. In Chappaqua, the two lived in a house owned by Lee. The couple announced on September 25, 2019 that they had ended their relationship.
Lee is reportedly dating Algerian born Abdulwahab Benyoucef, an actor well-known as Ben Youcef, who is 13 years older. Sandra Lee and Ben Youcef's friends are reportedly affectionately refer to them as "Bendra."
Lee revealed on May 12, 2015 that she had been diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer. By then, she had undergone a lumpectomy and was scheduled for a double mastectomy later this week. Governor Cuomo wanted to be with her during and after the operation. She suffered a virus in her right breast in August 2015, which culminated in her going back to bed rest and intravenous medications for three months. In late 2015, Lee announced that she is cancer free.
In 2016, Lee called for the passage of the $91 million "No Excuses" law in New York, which mandated breast cancer screening and eliminated insurance co-pays for mammograms. She then lobbied for other states to pass their own versions of the "No Excuses" bill. In May 2019, Lee spoke at the Susan G. Komen Advocacy Summit for breast cancer advocacy in Washington, D.C. Career
Lee converted a wire rack and sheets, or other surplus fabric, into decorative drapery in the early 1990s. It was first introduced via infomercials and cable shopping networks. QVC, a home-shopping channel, had recruited her as an on-air expert. Lee's first 18 months saw her sell $20 million worth of merchandise. On its networks in the United Kingdom and Germany, QVC also selected Lee to debut its craft and home decorating categories. She introduced her first DIY home improvement video series in 1994, which has sold more than a million copies.
Sandra Lee, a semi-homemade cook, appeared on the Food Network in 2003. The show lasted for 15 years and appeared in the top three new weekend shows on the network for the first five years.
