Chris Santos Career

Professional career

Santos' first job in the kitchen, age 13, was washing pots at a small local restaurant in Bristol, Rhode Island. In his early teens, the chef moved from the sink to the stove, where he began learning how to cook.

He attended Bristol High School in Bristol, Rhode Island, and graduated in 1989. Santos attended Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island, where he first planned on attending for only two years. However, after the school gave him a fellowship, he continued to study restaurant and hotel management for two more years, graduating in 1993 with honors.

Despite Santos' appreciation for his culinary art education at Johnson & Wales, he believes himself to be more of a "self-taught" chef, with no formal education under respected master chefs such as Jean Georges, Boulud, or Batali.

Santos' father, John & Wales, was hired by the renowned Time Café in 1994, where he would eventually become executive chef at the age of 23, which he did not complete until 1998.

He spent the better part of a year in Europe in 1999, which only enhanced his passion and love for cooking.

Santos returned to NYC in 2000. On returning to the United States, one of his first kitchen jobs was at Cranebook Restaurant and Tearoom in Boston. He served as a consulting chef for Rue 57 for a brief period. Santos opened Wyanoka, his first restaurant, where he was partner and executive chef, in November 2000. Wyanoka, a tiny "hidden gem" of a restaurant with only 27 seats, soon developed a loyal fanbase and received glowing feedback from publications like The New York Times, where he was enthusiastically attacked by former food critic Sam Sifton.

He became executive chef at award-winning Latin restaurant Suba in 2003, and he remained at Mojo in Brooklyn, New York, for the next year. Simultaneously, he was co-owner/executive chef at The Mexican Sandwich Company in Brooklyn, New York.

Santos' most popular restaurant at the time, The Stanton Social, was founded in January 2005 by Santos and Peter Kane, with partners Rich Wolf and Peter Kane. This restaurant, which is located on Lower East Side of New York City, has been well-received in a number of well-known magazines and newspapers, including Time Out New York, New York Magazine, and The New York Times. With its extensive menu of multi-cultural small plates, the Stanton Social introduced Santos' unique brand of experiential communal dining. At the end of 2018, the service was no longer accessible. He was named Star Chef Rising Star Chef in 2007 and opened a sister-restaurant that was his first smash success.

Beauty & Essex, Santos' largest restaurant to date, opened in December 2010. The historic M. Katz Furniture store on the Lower East Side was turned into a two-story crystal chandelier and a twenty-foot skylight. Beauty & Essex was named the "Best Restaurant in the United States" within months of opening, the A-list restaurant that has continued to promote Santos' career as a coveted celebrity chef.

Santos joined Brian Pedone in April 2013 to assist in the introduction of Boxing For All, Inc. Quiet Punch, which is a home boxing service that fits in with Santos' love for boxing, will be developed by the company later this year.

Santos' third restaurant, Vandal, is scheduled to open in Manhattan's Lower East Side in January 2016. In 2016, Santos will be based in Los Angeles and Las Vegas on two new restaurants. In addition,, he's currently working on his first cookbook and with celebrity Tattoo Artist Michelle Myles, he also wants to debut a long-rumored line of tattoo-inspired chef clothing.

Santos formed Blacklight Media Records, a hard rock and heavy metal label, in collaboration with Metal Blade Records, in February 2016.

Santos will open Stanton Social Prime at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas in winter 2022, according to the 2022.
