Early life

When her father, who was in charge of the Army's Military Postal Service in Europe, arrived in Nuremberg, he discovered her mother. Her parents were born in Germany. Bullock's maternal grandfather, a German rocket scientist from Nuremberg, was a German rocket scientist. The family returned to Arlington, Texas, where her father served with the Army Materiel Command before becoming a Pentagon contractor. Bullock's younger sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, who served as president of Bullock's production company Fortis Films, is a member of Bullock's family unit.

Bullock was born in Nuremberg, Germany, and Vienna and Salzburg, Austria, and grew up speaking German. In Nuremberg, she received a Waldorf education. Bullock stayed with her aunt Christl and cousin Susanne, the latter of whom later married politician Peter Ramsauer as a child, although her mother went on European opera tours. Bullock enrolled in ballet and vocal arts as a child and often accompanied her mother, appearing in small parts of her opera performances. She appeared in the opera's children's choir in Nuremberg. Bullock has a scar above her left eye that was caused by a tumble into a canal as a child. Bullock, although she maintains her American citizenship, applied for German citizenship in 2009.

Bullock spent her time at Washington-Lee High School, where she was a cheerleader and appeared in school theater productions. She earned a BFA in Drama in 1985 after graduating in 1982. She appeared in many theater productions, including Peter Pan and Three Sisters, while at ECU. While auditioning for roles, she migrated to Manhattan, New York, where she earned herself as a bartender, cocktail waitress, and coat checker.

Bullock also owns assets in Los Angeles, Austin, and New Orleans.

Bullock and the two crew were killed in a private jet accident on December 20, 2000, a runway from which she and the two crew escaped uninjured. In June 2014, Joshua James Corbett burst into Bullock's Los Angeles home. Bullock dialed 911 and locked herself in a room. Corbett pleaded no contest in 2017 and was sentenced to five years in jail for stalking Bullock and breaking into her house. He was then subjected to a ten-year protective order requiring him to stay away from Bullock. After Corbett skipped a court date last month, police officers went to his parents' home on May 2, 2018, where he was staying in a guest house, to arrest him. He refused to leave and assaulted policemen. After a five-hour standoff, a SWAT team was sent, and they deployed gas canisters and reached the house where Corbett had committed suicide. According to the Los Angeles County coroner, Corbett's death was caused by "multiple incised wounds."

Bullock took acting lessons with Sanford Meisner while living in New York. She appeared in several student films and gained a role in No Time Flat, an Off-Broadway play.
