Life and career

Sniderman, a born in Toronto, Ontario, grew up in Kensington Market, the country's Jewish enclave. He attended high school at Harbord Collegiate Institute and began selling records in his brother Sidney's store, Sniderman Radio Sales and Service, in 1936. In 1959, he opened his first store on Yonge Street in Toronto, and then moved it to the iconic 347 Yonge Street flagship store location in 1961. He began franchising the store in 1969.

In 2000, he retired and handed over the company to his sons, Bobby and Jason, as well as Sid's daughter Lana and Arna. The city's flagship Toronto store that bore his name closed in 2007 and its distinctive facade was designated as a heritage site.

Following the university's closing, Sniderman expressed his support for Ryerson University's attempt to exproduce the Yonge Street property if his children and nieces were unable to reach an agreement to sell the property to the university. In the end, Ryerson (now known as Toronto Metropolitan University) and the family reached an agreement to buy the house from the family.
