Mike Lazaridis Career

Personal, education, and career history

Lazaridis was born in Istanbul, Turkey, to Pontic Greek parents Nick and Dorothy Lazaridis, who provided the original lineage to Chios' island. When his family immigrated to Canada in 1966, they settled in Windsor, Ontario. He was five years old. He was given a prize at the Windsor Public Library for reading every science book in the library at age 12.

He began studying electrical engineering at the University of Waterloo in 1979 with a specialization in computer science. Lazaridis responded to a request from GM (GM) to create a network computer control display device in 1984. GM has granted him a job. He dropped out of university the year before graduating, just two months before. Lazaridis, Mike Barnstijn, and Douglas Fregin were able to start Research In Motion thanks to the GM's small government grant and a loan from Lazaridis' parents. One of the company's first accomplishments was the development of barcode technology for film. RIM slowed the profits from wireless data transmission development, eventually leading to the introduction of the BlackBerry mobile phone device in 1999 and its more popular version in 2002.

Both Lazaridis and his companion Ophelia have been lauded for their philanthropic efforts in the Waterloo area.
