Worldies, own goals, late drama, golden oldies and super subs… MATT BARLOW reviews a thrilling Euro 2024 group stage and picks his XI of the tournament so far

There were own goals and wonder goals. There were script-changing late goals. Records were shattered, hearts broken and noses busted in the group stage of Euro 2024. There were bright shiny newbies and great golden oldies. Unlikely heroes burst from the fringes. There were pink kits and pretzels, armies of tartan, invasions of orange. Blaring car horns of late-night celebration, doner kebabs and mighty steins of ale.
Reasons to be cheerful... and fearful! Scotland's attitude was spot-on against Swiss, but performance has to be a lot better on Sunday. And there can't be any more crazy mistakes!

There were many moments during last Friday's opening game in Munich when it felt like the 23 years Scotland spent in international exile were, in fact, a blessing in disguise. Even before Ryan Porteous was sent off on the cusp of half-time, the match was an embarrassing, one-sided rout. Steve Clarke had lost players of the ilk of Aaron Hickey and Lewis Ferguson in the weeks before Euro 2024 started, yet it appeared that the heart and soul of the team had already been ripped out.
£72m Man United star is included in the WORST team of the Euros so far, joining four Scotland players in an XI of the top flops from the first round

The first round of group stage matches came to a thrilling end on Tuesday night as Portugal recovered from a goal down to beat Czechia in the Leipzig rain. Hours earlier, fans had been treated to arguably the game of the tournament between Georgia and Turkey at an even more raucous and wet Westfalenstadion. Euro 2024 began with the largest-ever opening game win, as Germany thumped Scotland 5-1. It's fair to say the tournament has been a roaring success in its first few days.
