He also played for the New York Rangers, for whom he served as team captain from October 2014 until being traded to the Lightning in 2018. McDonagh has also competed internationally for the United States, and he was a member of the men's ice hockey team in Sochi at the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Personal life

McDonagh married Kaylee Keys, a long-time girlfriend, at Our Lady of Victory Chapel in Saint Paul, Minnesota, on July 19, 2013. In October 2016, the couple had their first child together. Steve Walsh, the former National Football League quarterback, is his uncle.

McDonagh, a draftee, starred with the University of Wisconsin-Madison for three seasons before moving to the Rangers for the third year. McDonagh re-enrolled in January 2021, taking online classes to complete his final 18 credits and graduate with a degree in Personal Finance. McDonagh's classes were not available online on days he did not have NHL games and said he had always intended to return to school to graduate, but core courses were not accessible online when he played professionally, and he was able to attend again after courses he was interested in were relocated online during the school's reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic in Wisconsin.

McDonagh completed an entry-level deal with the Rangers on July 6, 2010, after missing his senior season at Wisconsin and joining childhood friend and former Wisconsin teammate Derek Stepan in New York.

He was promoted to the Rangers on January 3, 2011 after beginning the 2010–11 season with the Rangers' American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack. He appeared in his first NHL game against the Dallas Stars on January 7, 2011. On January 20, he earned his first NHL point on his support for a Brandon Prust goal against the Carolina Hurricanes. McDonagh recently agreed to a new six-year, $28.2 million contract with New York, which was announced on July 8, 2013. As the Rangers finished fifth in the Eastern Conference, he led all Rangers defensemen with 43 points in the 2013-14 season. McDonagh was named the 27th captain in Rangers history on October 6, 2014, filling the void left by Ryan Callahan the previous season. He had been given alternates for Martin St. Louis, Marc Staal, Dan Girardi, and Derek Stepan. McDonagh was the fourth-youngest Ranger captain and 11th defenseman to hold the award. Following weeks of trade rumors fueled by a team letter from Rangers fans on February 8, 2018, a rebuild was announced. McDonagh played in his 100th appearance in a single NHL playoff game on April 18, 2018.

Ryan McDonagh signed a seven-year, $47.25 million contract extension with the Lightning on June 1, 2018. A man throws a CATFISH on the ice, but there are only missing players in a hockey game in Nashville

www.dailymail.co.uk, February 17, 2023
To find any fish this time of year, you'd have to go to a frozen lake or pond and drill a hole through the ice. However, in Nashville, all you have to do is go to a hockey game. On Thursday night, the floundering Nashville Predators hosted the NHL-leading Boston Bruins, who found themselves 4-0 late in the second period. As he lobbed a catfish over the glass and onto the ice, one fan reportedly wanted to bring some energy into the audience – or maybe was protesting the poor show.

After five seasons without a captain, the New York Rangers named Jacob Trouba the 28th captain in team history

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 9, 2022
Trouba became the Rangers' first captain since February 2018, when the Rangers traded away then-captain Ryan McDonagh to the Tampa Bay Lightning in February 2018. He joins a long line of famous players who have been named captains for the Original Six franchise, including Hockey Hall of Fame Harry Howell, Andy Bathgate, Brad Park, Phil Esposito, Mark Messier, and Brian Leetch.
